Public Education costs: What's the ROI???

I want to chime in but the topic is too complex.

It was very interesting reading what has been posted so far.

I have ventured onto many message boards the past 10 years and some of the best/logical minds, in my opinion, are to be found right here amongst the discarded oil filters.

I will add this one brief blurb;

for many various reasons, I predict very tough times ahead for the majority while a small minority do very very well and an entrenched bureaucracy will defend the status quo with all their might to protect their pay and pensions with no consideration of the vague notion of patriotism and with little to no empathy for the masses of disenfranchised.

obbop,
the "productivity commission" down here sets forth many guidelines for improvements to the state.

They regularly state that negative gearing of property should be abolished, and that pay rates and conditions should be reviewed.

Funnily enoigh, our elected lords and masters look at one of those...guess which.

I do believe that big changes are just around the corner for Public Education, and these exorbitant costs will drive it! In my line of work we used to have trainers that would show up several times per year as up-dates or new procedures or product emerged. Well, now, everything is done on line. At first it was "baby steps" but now it is becoming involved and quite interesting. It has been expanded to a "college" if you will, where if one had the time (unlikely) you could master jobs and procedures outside of your scope. e.g. If you were a bored electrician, you could master pumps and piping systems and increase your worth or delve into chemicals and their properties. All while this is happening it is on your file and when an opening pops up, so does your name. I realize that a teacher will still be present for some classes as a sorting WILL have to take place but these are the prices we pay. Perhaps when the CD is playing, there will be less goofing off in class as students will quickly realize that they need to be quiet and pay attention as the disc just keeps playing? I doubted the value of web-based training at first {probably a natural tendency with loss of a human and would require more effort on my part) but it certainly works. "The truely educated never graduate" (unknown)
