PU or PYB 5W20

Just got a little 98' Corolla, 4cyl, 4speed and has 200k on it from a friend that was moving. I am thinking of using either Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 but honestly thinking that if I dont drive it as much as my 03' civic, I could just go with a wix filter and Pennzoil Platinum 5w20. I have 2 jugs of SM PP that I got this past summer(last of the Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 SM I saw at wal mart). Would I be ok to use 5w20 in this car, or should I go with 5w30? Friend said it didnt leak or burn any oil also.

The advice here is to use what is recommended by the manufacturer, which I suspect is 5W30. Having said that, if the car does not see engine temperatures above normal, then 5w20 will likely be ok.

Someone posted up a Toyota chart with the back spec for oil requirements. Your Corolla is probably a bit old for back spec, but check it just in case.

I'd also recommend a Toyota oil filter. I always go OM on the oil filter and Toyota's are highly thought of and not expensive.

You might want to use the PP vs Pennzoil conventional if you'll have lots of cold starts, short journeys and want to maximize the OCI.

Id use the 5w30 since it is a 98 model. with your OCI, Id just use Pennzoil conventional since it has 200k on it. You can probably use 5w-20, i think it may have been backspec'd. I would find out what he used and would keep doing that as well, if its got 200k he musta been doing something good.

What sae grade and brand has gotten it to 200k? I think i would stick with what has worked in it for this long but, if you want to use Pennzoil Conventional or or Pennzoil Ultra 5w20 or 5w30 either one would work well in either synthetic or conventional.I am sure you will get votes specific to one or another as the line between 5/20-30 sae grades and synthetic/conventional is a war zone most of the time.

If its spec'd for 5w30 i'd run a xx 30 in it. if it does not use or burn any, i'd use a synthetic and drive it. Save the miles on your 03 civic. Just check the usual stuff hoses etc.

I will probably get and use or am currently thinking about the PP, from talking to folks on here about how good it is to keep things clean. I think I will use that in 5w30 grade. I asked him, and he said he was using 5w30, then called me this morning and told me it was Pennzoil Conventional in his oil change and maintenance notebook. He had the timing belt and water pump done twice and no problems with the car at all.

Just checked the back spec chart for you and it suggests you can use 5W20.

Yep, that engine has been back spec'd to 20 weight, same with the 96-2000 civics that called for 30 weight.

Well, I think I may use the PP SM 5W20 I have two 5qt jugs of for this winter. That, and my friend I bought the car off of gave me his last 6 toyota filters he had.

you might want to double check this since 98 had a timing chain.

i would use a 5w30 since 98-02 in the 1.8L were the oil burning years. mike

Any API rated 5w30 oil is going to be fine for the Corolla.

QS green bottle, Pennzoil conventional, Mobil super 5000 all will be excellent to use.

Older Corollas like that are known to consume some oil; I wouldn't even think of using a 20 weight. Use 5w30 at a minimum.

Thanks for the info guys, and I didnt double check or ask him if it had a chain or belt, so thanks for the clarification Mike. He told me it does not burn or leak any oil, so he must have kept a eye on the oil level and check things over every weekend like I do with my car. I guess I will use the Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 SM in the g.f. civic in the next month when I change the oil in her car.

You can use 5W-20 just fine, but keep the RPM's below 1000 and don't go up any hills.

Keep the PP for something else and just use Motorcraft 5w-20 semi-synthetic in the Red 5qt jugs at Walmart with the OEM filter and 5k OCI's..It's what I did on 07 Corolla and never any issues...
