Arco, do you mean that PC is an inexpensive major or are you meaning to avoid it?

All oils at the factory I work at are from PC. No lube related failures of any kind thus far. I'm in charge of all lubrication in the whole place, but no say in where they get it from.

Nothing at all, but distance. I'm forced to order everything from them and pay lots of shipping when many other places have closer distributors. it's a company contract thing I guess.

I'd be interested to know the HT/HS of Quaker State Conventional and Quaker State Ultimate Durability since Pennzoil conventional has one of the highest in conventional oil (i.e. 3.8 cp for 10w-40 vs the 2.9 ind. Std.). I'd like to know the 40C and 100C visc as well if anyone has this info.

The HTHS standard for 10w40 is 3.7 IIRC, Pennzoil Conventional is very average in that regard. An HTHS of 2.9 is a minimum for a 30 wt, most are in the 3.0 to 3.1 range, which is where both QSBB and Pennzoil Conventional fall in 5w30.

As far as Quaker State Conventional vs Pennzoil Conventional, the Pennzoil Conventional typically has a slightly lower HTHS and slightly higher VI than Quaker State Conventional. Quaker State Ultimate Durability is a different animal entirely though and in a different league IMO than either Pennzoil Conventional of Quaker State Conventional.

If that is the standard for 1OW-40, why do Castrol and Valvoline show 2.9 cp for their 40 weight spec sheets from their websites? Not questioning you ad I wish it were so. Just curious why they show that.

I'm a big fan of Castrol but they are horrible about publishing real information on their oils. They only list the required minimum, not the real HTHS on their oils. The 2.9 spec is an API minimum, and has nothing to do with their actual HTHS.

You won't find a 40 wt anywhere with an HTHS of 2.9, the lowest I've ever seen was a premium synthetic 0w40 that was 3.6, most are 3.7 to 3.8 (PCMO) and HDEO's are usually around 4.0.

Castrol GTX 10w40 has a fairly low kinematic viscosity (14 something I think) but also a very low VI, which means the HTHS is actually probably around 3.8 to 3.9. Most 10w40's have a decent VI but GTX doesn't so it's not a very good buy IMO, the High Mileage version on the other hand is very good oil and has a HTHS in the 3.9 to 4.0 range with a respectable VI as well.

Well guys, I did get a 1gal jug or Rotella T5 10W30 and a 5qt jug of Mobil Super 5000, since the wal mart where I am at the present is tiny and didnt have my grade of Pennzoil Conventional or Quaker State. Will use the T5 in the truck and the Mobil Super 5000 5w20 in the Civic. thanks for the suggestions folks, and I couldnt believe that Castrol still is $16.98 a 5qt jug.
