never heard of anyone refilling the small tanks like that but i guess you could...probably not worth the price to refill

I got the adapter to refill the small tanks from harbor freight last year. You can fill a 1 pound cylinder quite a few times from a 20 pound tank. If you go through a lot of 1 pound cylinders it pays off fast.

I should mention if you have never done this before that in order to get the best results you need to take your 1 pound cylinders and put them in the freezer for at least half an hour to cool them. If you try to fill a warm cylinder it won't fill it very much. Some guys use needle nose to pull the relief valve on the 1 pound cylinders to get them full but there is a chance you can over fill them this way. Ive found putting them in the freezer and then filling them gets them full within a few ounces of the factory fill.

Probably costs about $1 to refill. A new propane cylinder is $5-6 bucks. I don't use a lot. I use propane cylinders for a torch and a camping lantern. But is easier, cheaper, and less wasteful than throwing a steel cylinder in the trash and buying another.

Am i advocating everyone do this? No. But you can.

You don't throw a 20-30lb cylinder in the trash and by another one do you? You go and have it refilled, or you exchange it for a refilled tank. Same principle.

I refill my lantern ones when camping off the stove 20lb cylinder. My experience is after a few refills the valves leak so I only refill and reattach to the lanterns to burn them up while out or torch head stays attached to the cylinder.

I realize I'm quoting from May but back when I was in college and broke the wife and I did a lot of camping and four wheeling. We refilled the little green cylinders with the adapter and also experienced the leak issue. We finally stopped because leaking LP in an SUV seemed......not great

I have no idea why they'd leak after being refilled and never investigated further. I tried to ask Hank Hill but he never responded ;)

I've had new ones that leak after 1 use. I think the schrader valves don't hold up to the liquid lp, or the temperature of canisters vaporizing, or maybe its a speck of dirt from connecting and disconnecting . I use brass caps. Even on the new canisters i bought, i will use the brass caps.

If you refill the coleman 1lb tanks, you should really use a scale, otherwise you can over fill, especially with a warm full 20lb tank and a chilled 1lb tank.

I have been refilling the disposable 1 lb tanks for the last thirty years. I use about 8 tanks a year. That is about a thousnd dollars I saved by refilling.

As already mentioned, after a few refills, the valves do not seal tightly any more and the tanks have to be replaced.

I work at a moving and storage company and get a few 1 lb tanks for free when customers abandon their belongings in storage. I use them to replace the old tired tanks with the leaking valves.
