Problems/Issues to expect with 2003 BMW 525 Wagon?

watch out for the CCV (PCV in BMW talk) system, I changed oil on my E46 2004 6 cylinder every 3000 miles and at 45000 miles engine hydro locked in the cold weather here in Canada ( car was garaged!) expensive repair.

when you tell a customer that it will cost $8000.00 because they drove their BMW through water and sucked it into the intake and destroyed the engine its more than just a "few bucks" most of them are leased and the ones that are bought are usually all the people can afford with a few exceptions. Those engines are getting so lightweight that the headbolts can almost blow away when the fans in the shop are on high. Some of them are getting to the point that they are almost throwaway. Yes i am into saving money where we can but quality is my first concern. My wife leases a BMW for work because people have small minds they think because if an attorney is driving the big beamer she must be a good Lawyer. When we go out we take the Santa Fe because its a no drama car. The BMW is full of drama. Sorry waste not want not..

If the BMW is so full of drama, perhaps she should drive a Mercedes

In 30 years of owning, driving and tracking BMWs -most past 120k miles- I have never had to rebuild an engine or pull a head. The sum total of engine work has been three water pumps, an oil filter housing gasket, and a couple of valve cover gaskets.

I do bitterly wish I had a couple Sante Fes to drive instead of my BMWs, but such is the state of my miserable life.

That said, kudos to your wife for driving a BMW motorcycle to work.

I think BMW's are some of the longer lasting, more reliable vehicles on the road. In a family full of them, no one has ever been stranded by one, and none have ever required the head to be off... once you work on one, new or old, you'll recognize that they build them "for keeps", with an attention to design detail that I have not seen outside Toyota/Honda. Well, except for the Hyundai Santa Fe.
 
Every BMW I looked at around here (South Florida) had a quarter inch of sludge under the valve cover.

It seems BMW's came with "free" service/oil changes. The dealerships around here must be using the cheapest oil possible. And the owners must be changing the oil at the specified interval of 10,000 miles (or so) . These engines look awful inside.

I looked at an incredibly nice Z4 M. I was in love, until I pulled the oil cap. Literally 1/4 inch of sludge. The owner, a local doctor, was proud of his service record and that he brought it to BMW on schedule.

I just could not do it. I thought about filling the engine with synthetic and flush. But...

Based on the used oil analysis of my BMWs I believe that 10,000 miles is the maximum OCI that I would use. I generally change it at 7,500 to 8,000 miles- which is @1/2 of the service interval. The new BMWs now have a maximum OCI of 10,000 miles, so perhaps Munich has finally realized that 15,000 miles was an OCI too far...
 
Wow, I had no idea they were going for 15,000 mile OCI's. No wonder they can offer free service! They will only have to perform 2 oil changes before the owner trades it in.

I laughed inside.

I think people abuse their leased BMWs and in turn do the absolute minimum maintenance possible until it is time to lease their next BMW.

If I hadn't have bought my Mustang, I would have strongly considered a BMW, but in the same price range I would not have got something as fun as the Mustang. Although the build quality would be eleventy billion times better.

Nothing at all wrong with a Mustang. I've stuck with BMWs in large part based on my past experience. I have a great dealer and a great indie shop and that makes things a LOT easier when I don't want to do the work myself. The local Ford dealers are all uniformly inept when it comes to service and a Boss 302 costs more than I want to spend right now, so that helps to keep me in the Munich fold- although if BMW continues to emphasize gadgetry over the core driving experience on their new cars I will be looking elsewhere in a year or so.
 
I have sat in V6 Mustang and the material quality inside might not have been great but as far as build quality is concerned, I did not notice anything out of ordinary.

Can you explain your "the build quality would be eleventy billion times better"? Mind you, I own neither Mustang nor BMW, so it is mostly idle curiosity.

I love my Mustang, but the overall quality of the BMW is higher. It's like comparing my friend's Taurus/ Beretta knockoff to my FN Five-SeveN, both do the same thing, just one is built better.
 
she has the car not a bike..lol
I keep telling her we dont have to prove anything or keep up with the neighbors they all have rovers and mercedes and all the high end vehicles i like my hyundais and old plymouth voyager. Both my houses are paid for and my kids went to good schools all paid for by us like i said i have nothing to prove she needs the glitz i dont.
