Upgrade your captain with the skill set that allows you to see how many ships are aiming at you. When that number goes past 1, maneuver and run. Also try and upgrade gun loading time.

My first game with the Kirov (I just went up the Russian line this weekend to win the current Dragon promotion) I ended up in the top 3. The big guns make it a destroyer and cruiser killer provided you aren't being targeted by multiple ships. Since then, I was first out on a lot of missions until I learned patience.

It's a good ship, just takes a different skill set. I've suspected the Russian programmers have put cheat codes in the destroyer line (they can't miss, and you can't hit them on certain occasions), no reason for me not to suspect they have given their cruisers an advantage also. It's the only way Russian ships could be competitive.

So here's the thing about the Russian CL/CA line. Other than the Budyonny at T6 which has decentish armor, they are the definition of glass cannon. The guns are unbelievably good though, they are extremely high velocity, which means hitting even DDs at long range is easy, the have very good HE Alpha damage, and fire chance. They also have very fast reload, and they have superior range to American and IJN cruisers, and they have a very high top speed. The downside though, is that they are very very long, have huge turning circles, and have absolutely glass armor. But the reality is that good players can get a lot out of them, simply because of how phenomenal the guns are. Soviet cruisers are some of the highest performing cruisers at each tier.

The reality is that getting good at cruisers is very very difficult, takes a lot of practice to git gud.

Can you fire the guns individually? I find in Steel Ocean it helps with the slow reloading ships. You can drop a turrets worth as a sighter and adjust as they turn etc. Also with secondary guns its a good way to keep the other ships aiming off as they are getting rattled for 10 seconds straight.
Also perhaps you can configure your options and commander skills to emphasize one aspect of play? I set up my Ise battleship as a semi-moveable floating fort, adding extra armour and torpedo compartments, and commanders that make the ship tougher, and have better accuracy. All the extra armour makes it slow, but can take alot of hits while delivering a wallop. It doesn't lose too many broadside exchanges, and sunk many destroyers after they got close in to make a few torp hits.


In WoWS you can fire each turret individually, or as a full broadside. The thing is the Russian cruisers have very good reload, but they are absolute paper, I think the Kirov has something like 65mm of citadel armor? lol, and almost a 900m turning circle, so avoiding fire is difficult at best.
 
Going to address all the posts since I posted about getting KIROV in this one. Some comments may be repeats of what Nick said but will add my answers anyway...

1 - Yes, you can individually fire guns. Well by turret; not each barrel. Firing guns in WOWS works like this...

Double Click Left Mouse Button = all guns fire
Press & Hold Left Mouse Button = guns( turrets )fire one after another in sequence
Press & Release Left Mouse Button = one turret fires

I generally use full salvo volleys from my Cruisers but in my Battleships I prefer the firing in sequence method. On certain ships like the Cleveland or Fiji that have good rates of fire I will use the one turret at a time method now and then to harry Battleships coming at me or even other Cruisers. If I fire each turret manually down the line by the time I fire the last one the 1st one is reloaded. I can then press and hold the left mouse button and it will fire each turret as it reloads creating sort of a never ending rain of shot coming down on enemy ship. The effect is similar to ships like the Atlanta and Minotaur. It is very distracting to have shells hitting you or splashing around you non stop. I have used it to turn a charging enemy away from a CAP in Random( doesn't work against BOTS in Co-op ). Need to do it from behind cover like an island or smoke though vs. while moving a lot. Works surprisingly well.

2 - KIROV. The issue isn't Commander skills because the 3 things that are it's biggest weaknesses are not effected by them. Well, one would be but I don't have a Captain for a Russian ship with the points to add the skill right now and it is the least of the problems. The 3 issues are...

A - Detection. KIROV has a 14.2km detection range by ship which is as bad as a huge Battleship( my Konig is just 14.6km ). It means it is easily detected by the enemy and it is hard to run away and disappear when under focused fire. There is a 4 point Captain skill called Concealment Expert(CE) which would reduce it by 12% down to 12.5km but my Russian Captain does not have the points for that. Your Captain needs a minimum of 10 points to get to it and my only Russian Captain has just 7 points. So no help for this ship's woes from the Captain Skills.

B - Turning Radius & Ship Length. While the rudder shift time is "okay" on the KIROV at 7.8 seconds the turning radius is 860 meters and is WORSE than any of my Battleships. Add to that the very long hull and trying to dodge torpedoes is extremely hard. I am actually pretty good at dodging torpedoes, and especially ones from planes, but when torps come at me in this at best I can only miss "most" of them and limit it to one hit. This thing literally drives like a sea turtle trying to swim in the sand. This also makes it hard to wiggle and waggle to avoid incoming shells.

C - Armor. It is AWFUL.

Bow & Stern = 13MM
Citadel Upper = 18MM
Citadel Belt = 50MM
Citadel Lower = 13MM
Deck = 13MM
Super Structure = 10MM
Main Battery = 50-79MM

What that all means is this thing is made of cotton gauze. While many ships I have played have similar weak armor in the bow or stern they have better citadel armor which is key as that is where your powder magazines are. Also, even on ships with less armor they seem to take the hits better( hull design/shape? ).

While I have a win percentage of 100 so far I have only lived in one game so that 100% has little to do with me and is the team score not mine. I have contributed little if any to the wins. I haven't played it a lot granted but I have never done so bad with a new ship. Not ever and not even when I 1st started. It is ridiculous how bad I have done.

The guns are very good and it is super fast at 35 knots but neither thing helps when you are so easily deleted. I have tried being aggressive and also sitting back and it doesn't matter. All it takes it a couple hits and you are gone. The HP melt on hits like butter in a hot pan. It is like BANG BANG = POOF! I don't care how good a player you are you take at least a few hits in most games. The KIROV does not seem to be able to take ANY.

I have purposely started looking for KIROV's in games with my other ships now and when I see them I go after them. It is so easy to kill them it isn't funny. No wonder I die so fast with it.

Now I freely admit I am not a good player. Below average I am sure. I just don't see how I can do so well with all other ships I have played and so poorly with this one if it is me as Nick was talking about with it being the player's skill? IF so, then fine I own it but to me this ship is the worst by far of any I have played.

Would love the T8 BISMARCK but it won't be for a long time for me. Nick will get there long before me if he keeps playing the KM Battleships. He is a much better player, and he plays the game mode that has the highest payout and I do not, so he earns more resources. Plus, he already is at the T6 BAYERN and I am still on the T5 KONIG.

Thought I was within just a couple thousand XP tonight of getting the BAYERN and then saw I hadn't researched the KONIG's Hull C upgrade yet which I have to do before moving up( all upgrades have to be researched on ship you are on to move on to next ship ). So I researched that which means I now have to earn another 10K in XP for BAYERN. So a few more days. It will cost me $3,650,000 when I have the XP needed. Maybe I will get lucky and there will be a sale?

Once BAYERN is earned it will take the following...

BAYERN Upgrades:
Engine Upgrade = 5,000 XP + $300,000
Gun Upgrade = 9000 XP + $700,000
Hull B Upgrade = 16,500XP + $1,000,000
Research T7 GNEISENAU = 80,500 XP + $6,700,000

Total to move from BAYERN to GNEISENAU = 111,000 XP + $8,700,000

GNEISENAU Upgrades:
Engine Upgrade = 8,000 XP + $650,000
Gun Upgrade = 12,000 XP + $800,000
Hull B Upgrade = 24,000XP + $1,350,000
Research T8 BISMARCK = 135,000 XP + $11,000,000

Total to move from GNEISENAU to BISMARCK = 179,000 XP + $13,800,000

Total to move to BISMARCK from BAYERN = 290,000 XP + $22,500,000

Well, I was able to work through my eye pain and blurry vision and finish out what was needed to get the BAYERN today. It is just stock right now but I am sure I am going to want to get it upgraded asap. Will probably convert some XP from other ships into Free XP to do it but we will see. I wanted to get there first.

The arrival of the BAYERN meant I was short a port slot. 1st thought was KIROV but I don't want to quit on it just yet. So I had to let go of one of my "kept" ships. I actually retired 2 even though I love both so that I had a spot for BAYERN as well as the USN T6 Battleship NEW MEXICO or the USN T7 Cruiser PENSACOLA; both of which are not too far off. I ended up retiring the USN T3 Cruiser ST. LOUIS and the BRN T3 Cruiser Caledon. Very sad to see them go but it was time.

Took the BAYERN out for a quick shakedown cruise. Not bad for 1st game and a stock ship. I found the guns to be fine accuracy wise. I do miss the extra 2 guns on KONIG. Many people post the accuracy of BAYERN is awful but I found them to be okay. Not as accurate as KONIG but MUCH more accurate than KAISER. I am fine with them at least so far. I had no trouble hitting at max range or close in.

One negative people posted about that does seem to be true is that there are some performance issues with the AP rounds against other BB's when close. Man I went round and round with a USN T6 BB ARIZONA and HAMMERED it again and again( I had the position on it and faster reload )and the damage just wasn't what I would have expected with the 380MM's hitting it in what should have been soft spots. I seemed to do better damage when I was a lot further off?

I ended up raising my aim and took out it's guns so it stopped hammering me back( man does that BB hit hard with 12 356MM's - WOW! ). Strange how I couldn't seem to damage the hull much with relatively little armor but I took out 3 of it's 4 gun turrets which are armored like Fort Knox??? Just one game though so I need more to tell for sure. It sure hits hard at range though.

Overall not bad at all. Sunk the ARIZONA plus a CLEVELAND( USN T6 Cruiser )and put a good hurt on another BB( USN T5 BB NEW YORK ). Close to 100K damage done with no came or flags and stock as said above. Looks promising.


 
I'll eventually get Bismarck, but I'm working on Ranked right now, mostly with the Tier 7 IJN BB Nagato and Tier 7 Premium German BB Scharnhorst. 17 games last night, averaged 75k damage, got an inordinate amount of citadels, and a lot of high calibers. More info to come later. I want to get to the Tier 8 IJN BB Amagi to join my North Carolina, and also need to work on the Farragut (T6 USN DD) so I can get the Mahan. Picked up the T8 USN CA New Orleans the other day as well. What an upgrade the NO is over the Pensacola, it actually has armor.
 
I thought about ranked with my Fiji but then used my brain and realized I suck bad so didn't.

I decided to slim down the number of ships in port even more plus a new ship was added. I converted all the XP that was earned in ships sitting around not being played, sold off all the upgrades on them, then sold the ships. I also transferred to other ships, assigned to reserves, or dismissed the Captains. Basically did some house( port )cleaning.

So retired today were long standing regulars OMAHA( USN T5 Cruiser )and KAISER( KM T4 Battleship ). I found myself not playing them much any more so I sold them for some extra $. After some deliberation, I sold the KIROV( Russian T5 Cruiser )despite just getting it and only playing a handful of games with it( that was more than enough to tell me what I needed to know = AWFUL ship ). I just did not like the ship and could not get the hang of it. 99% sure it is me and my poor skills but no sense keeping a ship I hate. I am basically done with the Russian(SN) line now just as I am with the Japanese(IJN). Just don't like the ships. So I will now concentrate on the United States Navy(USN), British Royal Navy(BRN), and German Navy(KM).

A new ship was added today as well. The USN T6 Battleship NEW MEXICO. I spent most of yesterday playing the NEW YORK to earn the resources to move up. Had to play a handful of games today to finish but it is now done and the NEW MEXICO is in port.

So my fleet now consists of the following ships I actually like to play and will keep for the foreseeable future( haven't played NEW MEXICO yet so jury is still out but I worry about it's armor as it is easy to citadel so may only keep it long enough to get to the T7 Colorado ). Note I have started swinging more towards Battleships now...

Not feeling well tonight so jumped onto WOWS for a couple quick games in the NEW MEXICO to see what it is like. One word comes to mind = SLOW!

Same basic speed as the NEW YORK with similar turning radius( faster rudder shift however )but it "feels" more sluggish for some reason? Maybe because I am tired? Also has that same god awful 34 second reload time which is brutal when faced against German BB's with their 25-30 second reload. Those seconds matter.

Anyway, played 2 games and called it quits. 1st game wasn't too bad. Mostly T5 and T6 ships with just 2 T7 Cruisers. Did more damage in the 1st game in the BAYERN but only killed 2. Did a little less damage in 1st game in NEW MEXICO but killed 3 and helped a teammate in his Cruiser defend an enemy rush at a cap area. So I will call both 1st games about even. NEW MEXICO guns seem pretty accurate when you do your part.

On my very 1st salvo with the NEW MEXICO I got a Devastating Strike( not awarded in Co-op mode but that is what it is called )on a T5 OMAHA at 15km. 2 citadels and another hit and the ship just evaporated for the kill and 22790 damage. I was like

Later while defending a rush at a cap I citadeled a T7 MYOKO at 9KM for 19K damage( it turned and left after that ), citadeled a T5 KIROV at about 12km coming toward the cap for another Devastating Strike and 20K+ in damage, and finished off a badly wounded CLEVELAND in close to end the rush and the game. I finished the game as high score on team, with 3 kills( 4 citadels ), and 70K in damage.

2nd game was SCARY though! Wound up bottom tier against all T7/T8's other than my matching T6 ship. Faced a T8 BISMARCK(BB), T8 NORTH CAROLINA(BB), T8 TIRPITZ(BB), and a T7 SCHARNHOST(BB). The Cruisers were a T8 NEW ORLEAMS, T8 MOGAMI and a T7 YORCK. The ship they matched to mine was a T6 FUSO(BB) rather than another NEW MEXICO for some reason? I was like this most of the game

Spent a lot of the middle of the game just running from and dodging shot from the higher tier BB's. The enemy BISMARCK for some reason targeted me and stayed on me like a rabid dog. Thank god for islands to dodge behind and my being targeted/incoming fire alert Capt Skills. Finally our BISMARCK came to my aid. I wound up alone at a cap near the end of the game facing off against the FUSO. I took it out. Ended up with just under 60K in damage for the game and the 1 kill. Was glad just to have lived frankly. I absolutely DETEST and HATE the +2 MM system. Just grossly unfair when you are at the bottom of that +2.

Anyway. here is the 1st game. Didn't shoot a lot but when I did made it count...



 
Here you go, I'm taking a break from ranked because of weekend kiddie idiots who caused me to go from rank 10 to 12 this morning. Fortunately ranked got me enough XP on the Nagato for me to buy the Amagi, the Tier 8 Japanese Battleship. Free xp'ed the hull and propulsion upgrade. Pretty nice.

I spent the weekend and then a few hours this morning grinding out the XP for the USN T7 Cruiser PENSACOLA with my CLEVELAND. I ended up converting the 40K in XP I had earned in it to Free XP, by accident apparently, when I did the big port clean and purchase of the NEW MEXICO. I was like OH NO!!! I have to start over!!! You idiot!!!

Thankfully they had that special US event going on where you got a lot of extra XP so it helped. Then all the flags for the Million HP damage caused in a USN ship helped too. Glad I had that permanent camo for CLEVELAND with the XP boost too. Felt like it took for ever to get the 70K XP ( you know me = Co-op ).

This weekend and today have been BRUTAL for me as far as MM goes. Way too much of the +2 and not just a ship or two. I bet you a minimum of 50% of the time I was bottom tier and it was 75%+ T8. T8 Cruisers are hard to deal with in the CLEVELAND but when they throw multiple T8 BB's at you it is a slaughter. Even the Co-op BOTS seem to enjoy Seal Clubbing!

Anyway, I got through it and now have the PEPSI researched. Haven't purchased it yet as it is $5.5 Million and I need to get my Bayern upgraded so the money needs to go elsewhere. Plus, as you know, it is so fragile that I want to be sure I can max the upgrades when I get it. Not playing it stock. I actually 2 salvo'd a 100% health PEPSI today in my freaking CLEVELAND with the little 152MM's. 5 Citadels and poof. Not only that I swear my secondary's got one of them as it popped up so late( we were close ). THAT doesn't bode well for playing it. YIKES!

About it from here. My next to last game in the CLEVELAND was a classic play AA defender/support for the BB's like one of my earlier posts. Stayed with them and didn't do a lot of ship damage( finished off 2 BB's they wounded bad )but shot down 39 planes!!! Man they were falling out of the sky like snow during a blizzard.

I even was able to go and sink the CV at the end too. Good send off for it. I will keep it around though at least for now.

Nothing really close now to finish a grind on. Got 3 ships that I am basically just starting out in( few games in each ). BRN T7 Cruiser FIJI, KM T6 BB BAYERN, USN T6 BB NEW MEXICO. Add the PEPSI to it once I buy it. I have had the XP 2X's now to research the KM T6 Cruiser NURNBERG but have used it as Free XP elsewhere. I guess I could play the KONIGSBERG a lot as I would only need 35K XP or so to move up from it. Choices choices...?

In WOWS when you have an amazing game and somehow pull out a win for the team against all odds it is called a "carry". I have had a couple of those where it has been me against 4-6 enemy ships and I have somehow done it. It is an amazing feeling. However, when you die despite your incredible effort/game, and you are SO CLOSE to pulling it out only to fail( not through a mistake or anything - just can't quite finish it off ), it is called a "soul crushing defeat". I just had a soul crushing defeat and it is probably the worst ever for me. I am so mad. I had it right there for the taking and missed it by a hair. I felt like...

When the game started I headed for the A/B gap while waiting to see where big rush would be? Took a few pot shots here and there on the way( NM is slow so lots of time to enjoy scenery and pot shot LOL ). Did some okay damage; maybe 25-30K worth combined. Then went to the A Cap as all the ships at the A end, including the enemy NM, seem to be converging at the back of it behind the islands. So I head to help out.

Ships are exploding everywhere and before I know it the teams are 2/4 for them. There are 3 enemy ships and the friendly CL inside A ahead of me. Just as I am almost to the cut he blows up and I hear the dreaded "you are our last hope" message.

It was far too late to try and turn off going into A through the cut at that point. I was full steam and too close as I had been trying to rescue the CL. Not like I could run away in a NM anyway. As I head into the cut I size up what I am facing = a full HP NM, a 1/2 HP Budyonny, and 3/4 HP Furutaka. I knew I was dead at that point due to slow reload and poor maneuverability of the NM but all I could do was keep the bow at the BB and keep heading in.

As I entered the cut I swung front turrets to Furutaka on left and fired for 4 hits and 28,300 damage taking it out. I then swung the ship slightly more to the left which brought the back turrets into play on the Budyonny to the right. Not sure how many hits from the 6 shells but enough to blow it up. The 2 CL's were down in the span of about 10 seconds. YES!

I then turned my attention to the BB who right then got a shot into my side and really lolpenned me BAD as I was out of position after taking out CL's. The hit took me below 1/2 and it was basically 100%. This is where I was glad for the slow reload of a NM as it let me maneuver and eventually got position on it. I slowly whittled it down then caught it broadside in a turn and it blew up. YES AGAIN! LOL So all that was left was the other CL. I was at about 1/3 strength with a heal left in about 45 seconds so I thought I was okay. Nope.

Just then the detected warning goes off and the enemy Graf Spee comes around the corner about 4km off my right. I was only at 1/2 speed so there was no way to run or maneuver away without getting torp'd really. I knew he was going to torp me no matter what I did but maxed W and turned a bit for the best shot I could get and let fly. Hit it for a big chunk but it wasn't enough to take it out. With no chance at a reload in time I turned in on a ram course hoping beyond hope I could get it before it torp'd me. My secondary's had it burning good too by then but it was not enough. [censored] torps got me when I was maybe 1/4" from ramming it. I was like NOOOOO! LOL

I don't care if it was Co-op to pull of 140K in damage and survive what I did until the torps getting me was awesome. For me anyway. Might be the best I have played even in the loss?



 
The below screenshots are why I just don't like Random in WOWS. I try, really I do, but I just always lose. I don't have to always win to enjoy a game but it is nice to win at least sometime. I seldom if ever do if I try Random. It is the biggest reason, other than not being good enough to play at his level, why I haven't played with Nick yet when he has offered. I don't want to bring my bad luck to him.

And don't even get me started on the a-holes who blame everyone else for a team's failure/their death.

I got brave this AM however and decided to try the BAYERN out in Random to see if I couldn't pick up some credits faster. I have got it fully upgraded now so I figured why not try. I was quite nervous as I haven't played Random for a while and am new to the BAYERN but gave it a whirl. BIG mistake.

So today's 2 disasters...

I. T8 MM Nightmare:

Map: TWO BROTHERS

It figures that the 1st game I try a Random match in the ship, and in a long time period, and I am bottom tier BIG TIME( BB wise )! It is matches like this that just make me despise the +2 MM the game uses. Just not fair. Red team had BB, CL, and DD edge BIG time. We only had small CV edge.

I teamed up with our 2 TIRPITZ BB players and went towards A. It seemed to start out decent as we all teamed up on an enemy TIRPITZ and had him ready to go when he hid behind an island and we couldn't finish him. They lost the 1st ship and then it all fell apart in about 2 minutes. Our team started dropping like flies and both the TIRPITZ guys blow up within seconds of each other leaving me to face the non damaged enemy TIRPITZ, BISAMARCK, NEW ORLEANS, and 2 other CL's that I don't know what they were. Didn't take long for the game to end at that point. I did what I could then to protect our CV from all the enemy on A side( accidentally colliding as I tried to shield it hence the pink TK damage )but it was to no avail.

Was very disappointed in the entire game and felt MM was a lot of it. I did the best I could and fought with the team as they pushed and then ran when everyone was dead and the odds were massively against me if I kept moving forward. When I looked at the detailed report I see the only ships I engaged were T8's( 3 BB and 2 CL - so much for the guy saying I didn't fight in chat ). I wound up 8th out of the 12 players. Somehow I managed to only get hit 4 times in the game for little damage? Usually I tank a lot of it( see game 2 below ) but they never really shot at me?

So the pathetic results( I can do that and better in Co-op and enjoy it more )...




So I figure I will try again. Better personal results but same end team result = LOSS!

II. T5/T6 MM:

Map: TRIDENT

MM overall for this one was pretty even so no need to show it. T6 was top tier in this one and the only real advantages for either side in the game was the enemy had a better CV and our BB's were a little better.

Game spawns with me and 2 CL down by A cap and the rest of the team down near C. So I go with the 2 CL's to support them. Enemy team mostly spawns on A/B side. The 2 CL's and I manage to cap A while shooting at ships between A and B. Then we start moving towards B as the fighting has shifted to all B/C. On the way both CL's are taken out and again my team suddenly starts dropping like flies. Before I know it, it is me, an ARIZONA(BB), and our CV and that is it and they have hardly been touched AGAIN!.

I was next to last to die( CV was last ). When I did, I was completely encircled and getting pounded from all sides. In the game I sunk 2( BB-KONGO and CL-LEANDER )and damaged 4 others; almost taking out their NEW MEXICO(BB) right before their CV torp'd me and I died. I ended up with almost 92K in damage, got over $200K in credits, and was high score on our team. However, yet again, another loss.

So depressing. But hey, we actually took out 6 of the 12 enemy ships this time. Woot-Woot

Are the Bismarck and Tirpitz ships essentially identical due to being the same class (Bismarck), or is one better than the other in the game?

Give me a minute and I will give you some info...
 
BISMARCK is the standard T8 German tech tree BB and TIRPITZ is a Premium T8 German BB( have to buy it with real money or somehow win it ).

Both of them have their unique spec's( generally small differences )that are better than the other. BISMARCK has the edge in secondary armaments and AA while TIRPITZ has torpedoes.

I would probably say TIRPITZ is slightly better mainly due to the torpedoes. Being a premium ship it also pays better after a match. NEITHER is fun to face period however, as they are very tough ships, let alone when you are 1 or 2 tiers lower. Frankly it down right sucks!
