I believe the DVD contained a map of our galaxy with the position of Earth noted. It has been read, interpreted and now they have come to collect samples.

I remember when that was shot into space. It also contains I believe a map of the galaxy and where we are in it. Some questioned the wisdom of that. Possibly inviting an unknown to earth and exterminate us.

^^^ It did raise questions years later and to this day if we as a people should have voted on that, the wisdom of disclosing our location back then and now today. The question would be, should we, if we find life, answer them back? I dont think I would agree. Plus we have two of them flying through space. I guess by the time someone finds it I wont be on this earth anymore.

Now well over TEN billion miles from earth and still sending us information from interstellar space it should have enough power for its instruments to work until 2025 when it will be over 13 billion miles away. (NASA update says it is now almost 15 billion miles from earth moving 38,000 MPH)

Pretty impressive traveling through space for over 45 years now, its instruments still working built in a time when computers as we know them today didnt exist. Interesting stat from the NASA Site below, if it was traveling the speed of light in would take just over 22 hours to get to where it is today 45 years later.

Man, you think about some of the amazing feats this country could focus on and the engineering to shoot this thing up at the precise timing of an alignment of planets that occurs every 176 years for it to propel itself. Actually two of them. Truly was ahead of its time and never expected to last this long.

Great thread, I love this stuff, check this out =
"Voyager 1's next big encounter will take place in 40,000 years when the probe comes within 1.7 light-years of the star AC +79 3888. (The star is roughly 17.5 light-years from Earth.) However, Voyager 1's falling power supply means it will probably stop collecting scientific data around 2025."

Really interesting stuff here.
I love this stuff, I wish we had the drive to keep moving forward, maybe we are but I feel like we are less focused. A lot of technology was born out of our drive to reach for the stars. Just amazing that we pulled off something like this 45 years ago. The research and engineering, just amazing.

Given human history and what humans are capable of...it might be in the alien's best interest to stay away for now...(the fable of the frog and scorpion...)

I mean, if they have the technology to fly through space and get us in that sense. I think we aren't in a position to dictate terms and I really can't imagine a space faring race NOT knowing about us primitive life forms.

If you think this is spectacular(and it is) I am still wrapping my head around this gem and how someone even came up with the idea.

I read over this quickly and plan to revisit the article you posted. I too am trying to wrap my head around this, so much so I was discussing your post with my wife last night in the car. She is a "techy" person too in her own way.
Just amazing how we had solutions to everything in this country with only a can do attitude including getting men back from the moon after an explosion onboard their craft.
We did AMAZING things.
