President Bush declined an invite to speak at the upcoming NAACP convention. Kerry accepted.

I don't understand why the President would decline. Seems like a great opportunity to bring his message out in a new forum.

Declining will no doubt fuel some old and ugly fires...

I just don't get it. I wish he would go.

The NAACP has it's hands quite deep in the Democrat's pockets. On paper, it looks like a good idea to build some bridges, but it won't happen with the NAACP power brokers. They have too much to lose by moving to the Republican side of the fence.

Until the power brokers stop getting their pockets lined for the sake of always voting in one direction, Democratic, nothing will change.

As it stands, Bush would only get booed off stage if he spoke now. The good book says "don't cast your pearl before swine". I love that verse, it doesn't mean the people are swine, it means don't put place your best offerings on the table since it will only be trampled on.

I really feel sorry for those who follow what the NAACP says as they're being mislead so often by these "leaders".

I love it, too. But it is referring to the Gospel (the Pearl of great price), not economic agenda, education policy, etc.

I agree with you that the powers that be in the NAACP will not rush to Bush with open arms

But why give them more ammo to say, "See, he and all Republicans could care less about the black community". If they are going to say it, make them say it and look stupid, not right!

Bush sure isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. Do you think he is eating all of the lead paint off the walls in the white house? I can't believe I voted for him the first time

it will be a cold day in **** before i defend bush, but really, what could he gain by going there? he got about 10% of the black vote in 2000. he spoke at bob jones university. when in brazil, he asked the president/prime minister/whatever "you have black people here?" outside of condi and colin, he's written off the black vote.

that would be like bill clinton speaking to the promise keepers. or the conservative citizens council.

Because they'll say it anyway! The press will say it anyway. Until they plan on switching parties, it was purely a political move to send the invite out.

Why send an invite out when the of the NAACP equated the Republicans to the Taliban? Makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever other than they're playing games...er...politics with the other party in an election year.

I think ToyotaNSaturn got it right: "As it stands, Bush would only get booed off stage if he spoke now. The good book says "don't cast your pearl before swine". That's exctly what would happen

So much for the Republican "big tent".

Even if he got a chilly reception, he should have gone. By refusing, he just reinforces the minority community belief that the GOP is a party for rich white men.

You can't switch anybody to your side if you refuse to talk to them.

I guess you guys are right there aren't enough secret service guys to protect him in that forum.

Plus knowing Bush he would start off asking them who eat all of the fried chicken and watermelon before he got any.

Have any of you ever lived in a city where the NAACP's leading frogs are on the nightly news? The media never challenges their position no matter how outrageous. Even if they equate our parties to the Taliban. They can say or do anything without worry of being called into question about it's motives and ethics.

Ever see what happens to the areas where the power brokers lord over? Anyone remember Dan Rostenkowski? Ever been to south Chicago? All that money poured into the cities for all the bloodshed? These people vote to whatever the power brokers say.

I'm glad Bush didn't accept the invitation. He's smarter than many give him credit for. They gave him bait and he didn't bite on it.

Watermelon & Chicken? C'mon...that's tasteless and darn near a cut down to those people.

Does this sound like the kind of group any serious person should address?

"NAACP chairman Julian Bond singled out Republicans as 'enemies of black Americans' and compared conservatives once again to the terrorist Taliban. He said, 'Their idea of equal rights is the American flag and the Confederate swastika flying side-by-side. They've written a new constitution for Iraq and ignore the Constitution here at home. They draw their most rabid supporters from the Taliban wing of American politics, and now they want to write bigotry back into the U.S. Constitution.'"

He should tell them what Cheney told Leahey.

Actually, by snubbing them, he played into their hands. Had he gone, and been treated poorly, it would have been a mark against his hosts. By not going, it is a mark against Bush.

The smart thing to do would have been to accept the invitation. In the grand overall political scheme, it is more important that he show the general public that he tried to be inclusive. It is less important that he actually convert anybody.

By refusing, Bush now leaves himself open to propaganda that he cares little to nothing about the black community. All that can accomplish is a bigger anti-Bush black turnout on election day. I clearly recognize that most black registered voters will not vote for Bush. Given that fact, wouldn't it be smarter for Bush to give them less reason to actually go to the polls on election day?

Hahahahaha..so true.
One other thing-his handlers go out of their way to make sure blacks are prominately present in back of the pres in any community event he speaks at. So what is more effective seeing a down to earth community black applauding the pres or a bunch of non-mainstream blacks shouting him down??- You decide

I think W has made a concious effort to marginalize these groups and it is probably working.

The NAACP ain't what it used to be and I doubt most blacks care too much about them.

I wonder if Bill Coosby was invited?

It's been awhile since I've been here...no computer.

To this subject I have a little personal experience to share. First, I will state that I am NOT a biggot nor do I feel any one race is superior to another. I am a white American male. I applied to become a state trooper when I was younger trying to follow in my father's footsteps. I was told that I did not have the proper qualifications. I should go to college for another year and then re-apply. Well, this was after I had already gone to college for two years. Ok, so I asked what the minimum requirements were since my friend (who is a black male) had the same college time as I did yet he was accepted into the program.

Well, when all was revealed I was quite pi$$ed. It lays out like this:
White male-3yrs college
White female or black male-2yrs college
Black female or "other" male-1yr college
"other" female-HS diploma

Supposedly this has been changed a bit over the years and is not so wide a gap anymore. However, I think it's ridiculous that a "other" female can get the job with just a HS diploma when someone with a AAS diploma can't! To me this is racist and sexist.

Now, Bush once said, and I don't remember when, that the country is full of reverse discrimination. Basically we're catering to one race over the whites. Right? Well, that's just WRONG!!!! My kid had to be bussed to a school an hour away when we had a school less than 1/4 of a mile from our house. Why? Because there weren't enough black kids in the school near us. Why? Because there were very few black families in that neighborhood. DUH!!! There weren't very many white kids in the school my daughter went to. Why? Because it was located in a nearly exclusively black and hispanic neighborhood!! Gee...makes sense to me. Yet someone somewhere decides that they have to waste money to make the schools "equal" and then they claim that the whites are making the blacks slaves again by denying them an education. Well, if people would quit spending money on stupid stuff like bussing kids and hour away, maybe they would be able to afford better supplies/teachers/curriculums etc.

To add one more thing...when's the last time you heard of the NAAWP? Never? Cause it doesn't exist. National Association for the Advancement of White People. Hmm....sounds an awful lot like a white supremacy group doesn't it. Why doesn't the NAACP give you the same thoughts?

I'm betting Bush has similar feelings and that's why he doesn't want to speak at their hate rally....err I mean conference.

And keep in mind, the Elites send their own precious white kids to expensive private schools. I wonder how many African American students were in Chelsea Clinton's class at Sidwell Friends Academy.
