Last two oil changes were performed by my local Cadillac dealer. They charged $30 for each oil change. Used this filter, which honestly looks to have held up well for 5500 miles. They did strip my drain plug however as I discovered when I changed it myself a couple weeks ago. Thankfully the threads on the pan itself were okay. Oil filter must have also had a few ugga duggas going on because that filter was on tight.

New oil that went in was Valvoline 5w30 R&P with an STP Extended S3387AXL filter.

Never heard of such a cheap dealer change before. I think my cadilac stealer wanted 180 bucks for 8 quarts of junk 0w-20 and a whatever filter.

Checked my stealer page and lucky me I can print a coupon that brings the cost of an 8 quart change down to 148.23. I wouldn't even pay 48.23 unless I physically couldn't do it anymore.

A day or two after I changed the oil, I got an email with a coupon for a $19.99 oil change—mixed feelings because that’s an incredible deal, but also difficult to trust them when they strip drain plugs and tighten oil filters like it’s a lug nut!

It’s an AutoNation Cadillac btw
Car dealers typically employee “bottom rung” kind of guys to perform oil changes . While some are conscientious - many just don’t care to do the job correctly (i.e. carefully installing oil drain plug and only tightening enough to snug up the crush washer . Oil filter should be tightened 3/4th of a turn more once gasket makes initial contact with metal).

I've heard of dozens of instances where shops strip out the oil pan drain plug. I mean is it really that hard to not do that. Happened to mom who bought a new Toyota Camry and had every one of the oil change done at a Toyota dealership. She calls me one day and says there's a big puddle of oil under her car. She just had the oil and filter changed the day before. Dealership came and got it, and then report that the drain plug was stripped out. The wanted to replace the drain pan and charge her to do it. It was going to cost nearly $1000 with parts and labor.

I called the dealership and said look at your records, as she has always had the oil changed there, so someone messed it at the dealership. The service manager claimed that drain plugs "wear out" ... I said BS, no they don't if they are not over torqued all the time. He claimed they use a torque wrench on drain plugs ... I said I doubt it. The guy who changed the oil probably thought he was loosening it to drain the oil and was actually tightening it more. Anyway, I raise a ruckus out it and the dealership ended up paying for it all, as they should have. If a guy can't even remove and install a drain plug without destroying something then they really should be working in that trade.
