Potential Motor Oil Shortage For Lighter Weight Oils

For what it's worth, internal AutoZone email.

I hit my favorite rural Walmart today. It's worth the drive because the oil aisle is always well stocked. Even though they say the Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 is probably not affected, I wasn't taking any chances. I saw a report on YouTube over the Auto Zone Email and the Dealer TSB's last night. That was the first time that I heard about this issue.

Where did you see Valvoline Restore and Protect won't be affected? I'm exclusively a Valvoline Restore and Protect fanboy so was about to order a few jugs from Walmart.

I'm under the impression that the 0W8 through 0W20 are the oil weights that are being affected the most. Actually hitting my Toyota dealer up tomorrow for a few extra quarts of 0W20. I have an upcoming oil change next month and want to make sure I have it.

Gocha, I just bought several jugs of Valvoline Restore and Protect 0w20 for my Ford and Toyota hybrids and some 10w30 Havoline synblend for my Volvo. Should be good through Sept 2027.

I have a 2010 Prius with ~150k that started burning oil years ago around 130k, and Valvoline Restore and Protect basically stopped it, so I'm sold. I use it in my new Ford Maverick hybrid as well.

Go to Walmart or Amazon. Half the price. Similar quality.

I just went to my local Walmart today and they had no Mobil 1 except in quarts and it was only 10W-30 extended performance or whatever they call the gold label… they had in stock. There was no 20 weight of any kind of Mobil 1. They did have 5W-20 in Castrol GTX and Edge. Walmart’s super tech had 10w-30 4-stroke (no API) in stock in quarts the rest of it gone…. 2-stroke oils were completely in stock as was automotive grease.

Pennzoil Full Synthetic 5 quart 0w-20 was in stock (not the platinum), and I took the two containers they had. Were for sale at $22.97. After that no more 0w-20 synthetic Pennzoil was in the store. Valvoline had about 50% remaining no 0w-20 or 5w-30 was present. Havoline had some random quarts of conventional on the bottom shelf both 5w-30 and 10w-30…. Only one cardboard box of the 6 quarts of lifelong Havoline High Millage stuff for like $29… 5w-30

Quaker State had only quarts available but only High Millage 10w-30.

I did pick up some 10w-30 for my lawn equipment, too… it was the Mobil 1 extended performance.. I bought two quarts of it and only one was left on the shelf!

The 0w-16 was completely out of stock… I did not even see a placeholder for 0w-8

It’s not good folks…, but oil can still be had and for a fair price only now you have to look for it to get exactly what you want.

******

Went to Costco and they had only Kirkland which was boxes of 2 5quart jugs of synthetic. They had only 0w-20 and 5w-30 which is what most of us need. It was API-SP, but good enough… I would run it!

I had to do some mix and match to come up with my next three oil changes. I was able to stay within brands and within grades but had to juggle things a bit within the product lineup.

Yup. That is all I am saying folks are likely to need to do.

It is NOT optimal to need to buy quarts for example when they are say $8 to $10 at Walmart and you need 5 of them and your favorite 5 quart jug usually runs maybe $23... It is also maybe less than ideal to maybe have to substitute one brand for another, BUT it is still easy enough to stay in grade and API/Dexos etc. specifications.

Oil has never been a factor in getting 200k miles plus in any of my vehicles over the years. Run whatever you want in it and change it often. All these special oil specifications are way overrated.

No thin oil on store shelves?
Just buy that's available based on jug color, you can always add some gas into oil to make it thinner before you put it into engine.... Lol

How do you like the Maverick Hybrid if you don't mind me asking?

Likes/dislikes?

Thanks
