Potential Motor Oil Shortage For Lighter Weight Oils

Toyota just issued a TSB to their dealers stating that 0W-8 and 0W-16 may be lighter on the ground in the coming weeks.

They were recommended to use heavier weight oils.

In other news, if you look at the viscosity recommendations for vehicles located in foreign countries that have climates similar to your own, you'll likely wind up with an oil viscosity more focuesd on longevity instead of federally driven CAFE regulations.

0W-20 is still a low viscosity motor oil.
 
Toyota is being flexible given the impending problems. I am extremely curious what GM will do if/when Dexos oils are scarce and dealers can’t get it. So far GM isn’t budging on Dexos certification. Uncharted waters here. Will dealers just pump in a synthetic blend Group II? How would GM react to dealers servicing warrantied engines with non Dexos oils? Will dealers risk their status with GM or turn customers away refusing to service their vehicles if they can’t get the spec oil? Uncharted territory…

But GM doesn’t require dexos, right? Just an API licensed oil.

Besides are dexos licensed oils scarce?

I am not sure that GM has clearances that expand during an oil shortage.

GMs making too much money on that scam to ever let it go away.

GM won’t loosen dexos specifications because it will open up a Pandora’s box for them that they can never close again. I understand the position they are in by having “more stringent” specs. And if they side step that, everyone will know it now. Then it’s done and over forever.

GM will probably eventually, release a bulletin that makes using a non Dexos licensed product “permissible” outside of warranty repairs And with a shorter oil drain interval.

Or they’ll say nothing. Which, so far has been the status quo of the majors. Just, say nothing. Then slap allocations on everything.

Round 1 of allocations (may) looks to be 55-80% depending on the player.

Next month we will probably see some tightening down.


The weird one is still Shell. As they just haven’t said anything. Not even to their distributors. Not a “we are fine.” Or “we are bad.”

Just, nothing.

No they won’t loosen the dexos technical requirements but at the same time there’s no requirement to use a dexos licensed oil either.
