2009 Rav4 2.5 4WD. Drained factory 80W-90 in the transfer case and rear differential and replaced it with 75W-90 Mobil 1. 60,000 miles on the clock.

2001.5 Nissan Pathfinder, 2WD

Out: Valvoline High Performance (white bottle) 80W-90, in use for ~12k miles
In: Mobil 1 75W-90

The fluid looked amber and clear draining from the differential, but in the drain pan it looked clear and greyish. I didn't snap a picture. Is there any significance to this color?

The grey color is from iron wear. You will almost always see some when draining gear oil.

94 Ranger 5spd 4x4. Ford in its wisdom has no diff drains. Stuff in there was looking OK, just low. I topped off diffs with Auto Zone 80 w90, used about 2 qts between them Front diff gasket is weeping.

Most GM and Chrysler rear axles don't have drain plugs either, you are expected to remove the pan gasket every time.

It makes removing the gray slime of death easier.

Old oil looked a bit brown but wasn't as bad as I expected. Not very much in terms of metal shavings on drain plug.
