2015 Subaru WRX

Cabin Air Filter
Out: Potauto with 18,300 km
In: Ecogard Premium XC36115

The Potauto filter was weighed before and after use. It picked up 5.6 g of dirt and debris. I did remove it once or twice to knock out some of the bigger debris. I'm not sure what to do with this information since I have no idea what the holding capacity of a typical cabin filter is. I'm sure it could have gone longer.

The Ecogard seems to flow a bit better than the used Potauto filter, and it's got a MERV 12 efficiency rating, which is pretty good.

Engine air filter
Out: AC Delco A3109C with 25,000 km
In: OEM Subaru (Denso)

This filter was changed a couple of years ago. The media was still pretty clean, but half of the pleats were packed with bugs. I installed some insect screening over the intake when I installed the new filter. I checked the new OEM filter after 6,000 km and there was minimal debris in the pleats and it had only picked up around 3.5 g of dust. I don't plan on touching it again for at least another 50,000 km.

The AC Delco filter didn't seal perfectly, and there was evidence of dust getting past the seal on one corner, and the airbox was a bit dusty inside. The plastic frame of the filter wasn't very flat and the diameter was a bit narrower the the OEM filter in one direction. This engine will only get OEM air filters from now on.

2025 Subaru Touring XT (2.4L Turbo) with approximately 7400 miles from new...replaced with a HANN&CO filter found on Amazon for close to half the price of another OEM...charcoal filter...appears to be better quality than OEM Subaru...border on all 4 sides (as opposed to 2 sides on OEM) and fit was perfect...

2018 Mazda CX-9:

Out- Luberfiner
In: Carory from Amazon

93,075 miles. Old one wasn't too bad with about 20,000 miles. Pretty impressed with this Carory brand, seems solid.

2003 Toyota Corolla:

Out- unknown
In- Ecogard

263,200 miles. Old one was pretty dirty. Ecogard seems well built but I had to scrunch it a bit to get it to fit correctly. Probably will try a different brand next time.

Have the same problem with Ecogard CAF's in my Honda & Toyota. Gotta mess around with them a bit to get them to fit correctly. No problems with their engine air filters though. Can't beat their price on either one though .

Agreed, the Ecogard engine air filter I put into the CX-9 was really solid and fit perfectly.

Both good to hear but we don't ever know the quality of filtration products we buy.
It surely seems that quality-of-construction has to be measured on a batch-by-batch basis.
I firmly believe filtration media varies and whatever comes on the roll is what filter companies crinkle up and sell to us.
Maybe (hopefully?) ones which test-out OK remain unchanged on the assembly line.

I just got hit by a 'thunder-thought'.

Say you're in SoCal or Mexico and see a taxi with with a generator tied to the trunk lid and a house air conditioner fitted in a rear window.

If you wash the foam filter in the AC unit, have you changed a CAF?

Nothing good
A Pureflow ad popped up. Updates?
Nothing good nor bad. In reality, I haven't noticed any difference between any CAF I have used though I expect there to be. Maybe on the inside there is something going on but I don't notice any difference in outside smells. No reduction in airflow. I'm looking to get some for my Impreza though. The other HEPA filters like Bosch and BNX seem really thin.

I did order 4 more PurolatorBOSS PBC35667 filters. They were a decent price and are nice and thick though not HEPA.

2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring
Out: Mazda KD45-61-J6X
IN: MicroGard (From O'reilly) 4083

Kind of an emergency, didn't have a Mazda one on hand, filter was given out an odor of a wet dog, yuck.. Had to replace immediately. so off to O'reilly...Their house brand MicroGard is pretty decent in quality, no reduction of air flow

Was about to change my cabin filter, but my replacement super tech did not look to be as good of quality as the STP in it. And the supertech had a hole in it (see picture).

I had high hopes for SuperTech given the reputation of their oil and oil filters.

Might just go back and get an STP, but it's almost twice the price I think. STP was a snug fit. Appeared to be the same size, had I think 45 vs 36 pleats with Supertech. Also had a more sturdy edge (if that matters)

2014 Chevy Malibu. STP filter has 20k miles on it since July 2022 (just under 4 years).

That supertech looks fine and probably offers a little better airflow. It’s not like an engine air filter. That little tear is really nothing….remember this the next time you have your window open. Albeit the STP cabin filter looks like it did the job for 20k!

Good point. I guess cars existed without cabin air filters for over 50 years. But like 8 years ago when I changed it, I did see things like rat droppings and other stuff in it. So does make me want something a little better than the basic. Figure it also minimizes the gunk that gets into the blower and other internal stuff. And every now and again, when air quality is trash outside, nice to have.

Bought a couple months back a 2013 Hyundai Elantra with 45K miles. Finally got around to changing the cabin air filter and believe it is the factory original going by condition. Surprised I did not contract the Hantavirus. Replaced with a FRAM Drive filter.
