Post your dry dog food

The insutability of corn and other grains for dogs is overstated by popular culture. Some corn and soy content is usually well tolerated by most dogs if in moderation.

The reason we quit using dog and cat food with corn is because I noticed the Purina we were feeding the cat was coming out the other end in quantity and pretty much not digested. I am sure that cooked yellow corn is not a bad as just plain yellow corn, but not for my pets.

That whole article on corn in dog food is not exactly a glowing endorsement.

I noticed dog food like all other things is going up in price. Here is a couple of shots of the ingredients and nutrition details of IAMS adult dog food. I know some folks don’t like the idea of grains in dog food but my Vet was for it and my Chocolate Lab ate it for all of her 14 years with no issues. What experiences have you had with dry dog food?

I can't remember the brand but it was in a bright orange bag. My beagle corgi mix would bite at her paws till they were raw. My vet suggested that she could have a grain allergy (I always thought dogs shouldn't have allergies as they're dogs). Whatever I got I stuck with in the orange bag as she stopped biting her paws fairly quickly. Chicken was the first ingredient no corn or soy. Only once was my local store out so I got the Safeway version, and like swapping a kids frosted flakes for generic oh boy she knew instantly. She lived to be 17.

Our corgi is allergic to chicken. Within a couple of days, her belly will break out and sometimes she'll start paw chewing. It took us years to figure it out as we thought it was fleas or grains but could never determine the problem. We tried eliminating chicken based on a random comment by a tech at the vet and sure enough that was it.

How wild. A dog allergic to chicken.

Our Pit-Mix just turned 1, so we transitioned her over to NOW Fresh, Grain-free, Large breed, Adult.
I wish it was produced by an American company (I know Canada is on the North "American" continent, but you get what I mean).
My main reasons for going with this food are...
Grain free
Protein/Fat ratio
Calcium & Phosphorus percentages
Large kibble size (slow her down a bit)
Balance of perceived quality vs price

Purina One ingredients: Chicken, Rice Flour, Corn Protein Meal, Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal , Whole Grain Wheat, Soybean Meal, Beef Fat Preserved With Mixed-Tocopherols, etc.

That is why I quit buying Purina brand pet foods almost 40 years ago.
Great example of what you just posted and here is why.
The number one ingredient in that food is "corn protein meal" then "chicken by-product meal", then "soybean meal" and you can guess that real chicken is last or below the mentioned on the list. Common "trick" in the pet food industry.

Here is why. The number 1 named chicken is wet weight before processing into kibble. The "meal" is dry weight before processing into kibble.

Not bad but not close to the photo on the bag. Wish it didnt rely so much on pea protein and potatoes. Other stuff looks nice.

We were feeding our dog Purina Pro Plan, she had diarrhea often. We switched to Primal and the diarrhea went away. Our dog is a very picky eater.

I fed Open Farms large breed puppy food until my mutt turned a year old.
I also used to feed the Primal Pronto (chicken), about 1/2 with dry kibble.
The price of the Pronto freeze dried, was pretty good. I forget now exactly why I switched away from it.
My dog eats twice a day. Morning is about 1 cup NOW Fresh kibble and about 1 cup Grandma Lucy's (chicken or fish).
Her afternoon meal is about 1 cup NOW Fresh again with about 1 cup of Stella & Chewy's Tantalizing Turkey.
Both meals I add enough boiling water to cover the layer of kibble, so it softens up. Then I'll add the freeze dried food on top and mix in about 3/4 cup of cold chicken/turkey broth. My dog gets enough liquids in her foods that she hardly ever touches her water dish.
