Poor little CVT! Change your fluid!

Transmax is a bargain. I'm usually not one of those but under warranty I'd stick with oem to avoid dealer drama... I'd like to use it but.....
Well if you could get a deal on it with an app you would probably go for it.

On a more serious note. Can you imagine what that service would cost at a dealership.

I'm amazed that trans didn't fail if it was making that much noise. Bet it ground itself up bad in that time so I can't imagine it has much life left. I'd be babying that thing to the lot.
Kid took off like it was an Indy car again 😂

It’ll be interesting to see what happens to it!

Right! 🧐$$$

New transmission at min. I told him we’d slap a used trans in if it dies. Really easy to access.

I would have had the lad do at least half the work of the first change, and increased his share of the work with each additiinal change.

Give a man a fish vs teach him to fish.

When I first started working on cars, my cousin who knew more about them then I, said to me, " I won't do the job for you, but I will stay around and tell you how to do it if you can't figure it out. And if something requires two people I will crawl under the car and help you, or what ever else I can do to help. "

Maybe next time, teach him to fish.

Definitely. He was there for most of it, but shy as a dog whistle. Don't think he's ever picked up a wrench. I also showed him how to read ODB error codes, figure out what they mean, and how to clear them. P0420, cat running below efficiency. Maybe an O2 sensor. Cleared it and we'll see.

I have tried to teach hands on to my son. Its like herding cats . No interest. I keep trying though. Maybe some things will sink in. LOL Cars are just transportation to alot of todays youth it seems. Bless you for helping the boy out.

Give a man a fish and he’ll have food for a day. Teach a man to fish and he’ll sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Great job, and not to change the subject just wander a little, can someone explain how 1 fluid can be used in an Automatic and a CVT. I was under the impression that the fluid had opposite jobs in each of these. 1 to slip and 1 to grab.
I also wonder how 1 fluid works in virtually all transmissions
What is supposed to slip?

Same with my son. He knows how to do a few things in theory but just has no interest in actually turning a wrench. I did go through the process of changing a flat tire on his Jeep with him in case he ever needs to do that.

Yes, just did the second spill 'n fill last night on an SJ Forester. I haven't finalized the level or driven it yet. It was fine after the last time -- maybe a year ago.
Quoting myself, finished up this SJ today. I actually reset the adaptives afterward with my Otofix. No idea if that was helpful. So, thus far two spill 'n fills with Transmax and it seems "fine".

I'm not a CVT connoisseur but nothing seems abnormal except for feeling like you're driving a snowmobile......which I guess isn't abnormal for the Subie CVTs after all 😜

Keep us posted! Be great to hear long term reports on this fluid.

I was under the impression that ATF was designed to lube, cool and prompt smooth lockup of the clutch packs without grab or chatter. CVT fluid is suppose to promote a much more aggressive, higher friction fluid to prevent the CVT from slipping.

This thread is giving me flashbacks of my wife's 2008 Nissan Versa with a Jatco CVT! Despite doing a spill and fill every 30k miles it began to die at 140k. Squealing sound at startup and would go into limp mode...it would move under idle only. It threw a code and it was something like "Low transmission oil pressure".

Replaced the filter, it had a pan filter and a cartridge filter...both were nasty. It ran good for a couple weeks and the squealing noise came back and so did limp mode. Another spill and fill got it quiet enough to get it to the dealer and trade it in for a Mazda CX-5.

I have trust issues when it comes to CVT's now. ;)
