Were renting a place next week with a private pool (there is also a community pool). I thought maybe I should get some test strips and check it out before I jump in? Suggestions? Would need to be something I can buy locally or get shipped fairly quickly - were leaving next week.

Doesn't say if its saltwater or regular. Its a newish place in Florida so I am guessing saltwater - if that matters.

Lowes has Clorox and HTH test strips here. Are they really as easy as it seems - hold them under the water - compare colors?

When people urinate in the pool the urine reacts with the chlorine and forms the irritant trichloramine. I say this as a former pool boy and authority on disgusting human behavior in swimming pools. Spitting, blowing noses, peeing, and going into the pool unshowered are just some of the nasty things I have witnessed. There's more, Much, much more. What I am saying is, find a way to DIY-test pool water for urine and you will make a fortune!

Community Pool!

Ugh. I live in a 55 and over. There isn’t enough chlorine or test strips in the world that could entice me to jump into our watering hole. The clubhouse is adjacent to the pool and as I sat at poolside I could count on one hand the number of folks who got out, toweled off, and disappeared into the clubhouse to use the facilities over a 3 hour period. When you see an old timer doing that power walk across the pool don’t follow in his wake!

Pools get tested at least once every day. Find out who maintains the pool and ask them for the test results. At public pools they are usually posted on a wall. There is a contingent of swimmers who will complain that there must be too much chlorine and it is irritating their eyes and skin.

But then you can't swim or sunbath au natural. And I assume the rental has a weekly pool service, so you do have that, unless they are totally incompetent. If the water looks clean, I wouldn't worry about. You're not drinking it.
The words Assume, Incompetent, and the phrase I wouldn't worry about it, makes me realize, let's just jump in this Pool at the Rental Place. The you're not Drinking it comment, is the Icing on the Cake. LOL
