Polar Vortex Coming!

What I think is funny is the stupid names given to these things.

It is a cold front.
I think when that weather pattern affects two giant countries and has temperatures way below what the southern states usually see, it deserves a different name. I’m sure if a meteorologist jumps in here they will explain the difference between a cold front and a polar vortex. They are not the same thing.

It is just sensationalism.

A "polar vortex" is a weather pattern....with a doom and gloom name.

A cold front is the leading edge of a cooling trend....the abrupt change that we experience.

I wonder why the warming event after the polar vortex does not get a name? Answer: you cant really sell it and scare people into buying stuff.

Just like "bomb cyclone", just another name to sell. I dont need a meteorologist to tell me there is going to be a 50 50 chance of rain then tell me they are 100 percent correct.

Tomorrow is going to be even worse (-24C) 🥶
There is a point where cold is just cold. One morning 2010 in my enclosed attached garage, in Moorcroft, WY. It was -41 on the vehicle temp gauge and thermometer. Winds were about 10 sustained with gusts.=-60/-70

To me it did not feel any different than -20, which is was the entire day before.....I was working outside in the sun, tripping 3500ft of NG drill pipe, in a long sleeve shirt HIVIZ gloves and Baffin snow boots.....sweating=danger.

You are right, when it hits -10C here that feels brutal and it really doesn’t feel any different when it gets even colder. But the problem lies in the fact that some cars will have no problem starting when it’s -10C but then might not start when it’s -20C. The amount of people needing battery assistance from CAA goes way up around here when it’s -20.

My temp figures were in F not C, for clarification.

It was 9F outside this am when I went out. Because of the lack of wind it was no big deal. I usually wear shorts down to freezing or so, within reason/dress code.

Add some wind or moisture and it gets cold! I’m enjoying this for now!

Dang! The SE to NE coastal states from Louisiana up beyond New York are getting a decent amount of snow this 21st day of January. Some entertaining storm chaser live feeds on YouTube. Finally enjoying a real Michigan winter here. Yee Haw!
