Polar Vortex Coming!

Yeah, this one will go down big time.
-20 in northern states is not big deal. Carbon monoxide poisoning will be an issue with idling cars down.
How so? Assuming most people aren't dumb enough to let them run in a closed garage of course.

-14F here next Monday. Things start to really suck when you get into double digit negatives.
We have oil heat with an outside tank. The last time the tempt dropped into the double digit negatives the fuel line froze up where it passes through the block foundation wall. The fuel in the filter looked fine so I know it didn't gel up, must have had moisture in the line. I was outside with a propane torch on the fuel line for a while to get it to thaw enough to start working again.

I can't remember if I was running 50/50 blend or straight kerosene that winter.

I know many people that bought those plastic "sheds" that go around the tanks. Some made their own mainly to block them from the wind (and look a bit nicer). Angled, hinged lift up top with good brace for when they come and fill up. One friend did it with just 2x3's and matching vinyl siding in-between the 2x3's he put the pink Owens Corning ridged foam because it's waterproof unlike other versions also on top hatch.

When it got really cold he had an old school filament 60 watt light bulb he would leave on as it made enough heat to keep things free. His feed line came from bottom of tank but was enclosed in his "shed". Some people also do the de-icing cables just run along the fuel line with some insulation on top. Plug in as needed.

Is your fill port easy access to get a stick or something longer straight in to tank? Put some water indicating paste on end of stick to see if water is still there. It happens from condensation with the outside tank.

I use Fuel Right from local plumbing supply by my job (Patriot Supply). Amazon says can't ship to me so you might need to find local plumbing supply or hit their website. Their website says no issue shipping. I use the regular diesel and fuel treatment not the winter. They may recommend different if you call. I add 6 ounces each time I get fuel which varies from 200-400 gallons. I get the 24 ounce bottle and just mark the bottle. It got rid of the 1.5-2" of water I had in bottom in like 2 deliveries. It mixed in the water so it got burned up. I just use it now to maintain and check 1x per year with the stick and water paste.

I'm wanting it to get and stay cold to freeze up western Lake Erie.
Grown adults enjoying the winter near my parents house in Port Clinton, OH.

Not a unusual occurrence…

I have read about the “ Polar Vortex” for well over 20 years…. It is a annual phenomenon that was written in forecasting discussions by the HPC now called WPC forecasters within the National Weather Service.. Typically the polar vortex does stay much farther northward but sometimes it can get farther south. And that is not totally outside of the realm of possibility of happening.

The GFS here shows the colder air moving south and east. It will be very cold over a large portion of the of the lower 48 states.

I saw this pattern in the GFS a good number of days ago. It did catch my eye. Looks like the overall pattern prediction is going to be pretty good this time around.

The following extended forecast discussion from the WPC aka formally the HPC from years ago gives some idea of what will transpire in the next 6-10 days.

The upper level shortwaves described here are a huge factor in what happens with surface low development and then responding sensible weather.

It will be interesting to see to see what happens on days 5 through 7.

...Strong Arctic surge pushing into the central U.S. by the weekend
and gradually expanding eastward...

...Overview...

It generally remains the case that the models and ensembles still show the mean pattern evolving toward a very amplified regime consisting of a ridge extending from the eastern Pacific well northward and a Hudson Bay into northern Mexico mean trough by the weekend. As a result expect very cold air to drop into the central U.S. then, with below normal temperatures expanding into the eastern half of the country by next Sunday- Monday. Although the large scale pattern has well above average confidence/predictability, there are embedded shortwave details that guidance has been showing significant difficulty in resolving. As a result confidence is below average for any associated surface waves that could have a significant influence on sensible weather over the East (with rain south and potential wintry weather farthernorth) from the weekend into early next week. There are also uncertainties with a leading shortwave crossing the southeastern quadrant of the lower 48 around Thursday and a lower latitude Pacific upper low whose energy should open up and eject across the lower 48.

I'll have to see if I can get the fuel right stuff. Right now there's a bunch of snow around the bottom so it should help insulate a bit. If we were going to stick with fuel oil long term, I'd have the oil company vacuum the bottom of the tank.

I can get someting in the fill port, I've drawn out kerosene before for the portable heater.

use number 1 fuel oil and some Schaeffer's burn Kleen fuel oil additive, and change the in-line filter cartridge,,,heat tape on fuel line can help also.

If you liked the “ Arctic Pipeline” last week, you’re going to love the “ Polar Vortex “ later this week and next. Freezing temps are forecast to reach Houston. We’re going to get it west of the Canadian Rockies as well this time. Seattle will probably freeze. It’s supposed to be 19 F in Washington DC the morning of the inauguration. 🥶🥶
ITS CALLED WINTER! And we are in January. Get used to it
