But one of the world's leading experts on polar bears has been told to stay away from this week's meeting, specifically because his views on global warming do not accord with those of the rest of the group.

Dr Mitchell Taylor has been researching the status and management of polar bears in Canada and around the Arctic Circle for 30 years, as both an academic and a government employee. More than once since 2006 he has made headlines by insisting that polar bear numbers, far from decreasing, are much higher than they were 30 years ago. Of the 19 different bear populations, almost all are increasing or at optimum levels, only two have for local reasons modestly declined.

Dr Taylor agrees that the Arctic has been warming over the last 30 years. But he ascribes this not to rising levels of CO2 – as is dictated by the computer models of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and believed by his PBSG colleagues – but to currents bringing warm water into the Arctic from the Pacific and the effect of winds blowing in from the Bering Sea.

Dr Taylor had obtained funding to attend this week's meeting of the PBSG, but this was voted down by its members because of his views on global warming. The chairman, Dr Andy Derocher, a former university pupil of Dr Taylor's, frankly explained in an email (which I was not sent by Dr Taylor) that his rejection had nothing to do with his undoubted expertise on polar bears: "it was the position you've taken on global warming that brought opposition".

Dr Taylor was told that his views running "counter to human-induced climate change are extremely unhelpful". His signing of the Manhattan Declaration – a statement by 500 scientists that the causes of climate change are not CO2 but natural, such as changes in the radiation of the sun and ocean currents – was "inconsistent with the position taken by the PBSG".

The average temperature at midsummer is still below zero, the latest date that this has happened in 50 years of record-keeping.

Scheduled for release next year, it says the number of polar bears in the Davis Strait area of Canada's eastern Arctic – one of 19 polar bear populations worldwide – has grown to 2,100, up from 850 in the mid-1980s.

"There aren't just a few more bears. There are a ... lot more bears," biologist Mitchell Taylor told the Nunatsiaq News of Iqaluit in the Arctic territory of Nunavut. Earlier, in a long telephone conversation, Dr. Taylor explained his conviction that threats to polar bears from global warming are exaggerated and that their numbers are increasing. He has studied the animals for the Nunavut government for two decades.

Those pesky scientists. What will they come up with next?

First it was the evolution, then rockets and now global warming...

A society that cannot easily travel can be easily controled.
I am convinced that powerful people in powerful places will abuse this and use it for ill means. Global warming is a tool of oppression.

So, if this guy is not allowed to say his views, the views of the other people attending must already be determined, correct?
If the views have already been determined, why have this meeting at all?

Someone questioned my reference to some of these British news sources such as the link Tempest posted and the Great Global Warming swindle video. What would make those sources any less reliable than what we have here?

To reassure the sheep that everything is "just the way we thought" and to continue the implementation of appropriate environmental policies.

They will likely eventually hybridize with brown and grizzly bears.
The genes will be intact but hidden. Possibly in several thousand years from now, a new polar bear strain will re emerge, when we enter a great ice age, humans only being able to persist in equatorial regions. By then the human population may be only measured in 10-50,000 and Bob Is The Oil Guy mentioned only in fables and folklore.

I always fancied the tropics ..

(from Heaven Can Wait:)

Why do I have all of these naval uniforms?

You always fancied the sea, sir.

Do I sail?

Not really, sir.

I used to eat bear claws all the time. Often with a big cup of coffee. Diabetes kinda put that to an end

A. Brown bears and Grizzlies are the same species, Ursus arctos.
B. Polar bears evolved from Brown bears already, wouldn't be nice to have them devolve.
C. During the last Ice Age, humans of several varieties lived in various climes other than the tropics. Some of them even left pretty paintings of animals on cave walls.
D. What's Bob is The Oil Guy?
And as usual with Tempest and his sefl-serving links, there are always other things to consider.

You should start with their liver, fava beans and chianti.

These are the very same people that won't let the Canadian expert in the meeting this time.
