Hi guys,

This is my first post but I've been lurking for about a month now. I got my new (to me) car back in July and now it's time for its first oil change. I have used Mobil mineral-based oil in my previous car, but in light of things I've read on this forum and other Acura forums, I'd like to hear what recommendations you have for both oil and filter.

Here's my info
Year: 2007
Make: Acura
Model: TL Type-S
Engine: 3.5 Litre V-Tech V6
Mileage: ~33,000

Owners manual recommends 5W-20 mineral and I think 0W-20 synthetic.
I'm not sure about grades and certifications because I am currently waiting on a manual to be delivered.

Location: Atlanta, GA
Daily commute: 60 Miles round trip (30 each way)
25% city, 75% highway
highway cruising speed: 65-75 mph (1800-2000 rpm)
Driving style: I'd say most of the time I'm on the easy side of normal driving. I'd rather get better gas mileage than show off.

To this point, the car has no known problems. but then again, I've only had the car for a few months.

I can't really afford to run something like Royal Purple or Redline, but I would like a solid, reliable, well performing oil and filter.

I am open to mineral-based or synthetic oil recommendations.

I would also really like to know what you guys would recommend for filters.

As mentioned on this forum before, Walmart has Mobil 1 on sale for $21 (5 qt). They have 0W-30 in the 5 qt jug but not 0W-20, so what about that too.

I look forward to hearing what recommendations you have and what you have to say...Thanks guys.

If it were mine, I would use Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 and either an Acura, Purolator, or WIX filter and change it between 5K-7.5K.

Nice car.

I would add, if the manual actually recommends 5W-30, then that is the viscosity I would use.

Your're driving the wrong car for an "easy driving style" - you better sell it to me

I dont think you need a 0w oil in GA, so I would give EDGE 5w-30 or Pennsoil Ultra try. The EDGE is really a marginal 20 grade so you're all set. RP may not be ILSAC GF-3 or 4 certified. IDK if that would be a warranty concern ( though the oil should cause no issues in practice)

Type-S takes 20 weight???

Considering your climate and length of commute...

I'd run 10w-30 dino changed every 5-6k.

New Pennzoil or Motorcraft

What's wrong with 5W-20? Why recommend a 10W-30 over a 5W-30?
Your commute sounds alot like mine, only I'm a little heavier on the gas, and it gets brrrrr cold here in the winter. I still intend on doing 7500 mile OCI on PP for the warranty though.

That J series can take either a xw-20 or xw-30. If it were mine, and I lived in Atlanta I would be running 5w-30 year round, 7500 mile OCI (or the MM system, whichever you prefer). Pennzoil Platinum, or Mobil 1, or SynPower... even a good conventional like PYB would be fine for 7500. If you want to run a xw-20 for fuel economy that's certainly fine, just wouldn't be my first choice in a warmer climate.

Filter is easy. PureOne PL14610.

Pennzoil conventional 5w-20 or Motorcraft 5w-20 would be my favorites. Any API rated conventional will be great.

Follow the OLM and be happy!

My Dad has the same engine in his Honda powered VUE and it runs great with anything. Clean as new with 100k coming up.

Changed the oil yesterday in it and he used Chevron 5w-30 with a Supertech filter. Be forewarned that the filters tighten up and a good end cap wrench is good to have!

Take care, bill

I'd get some Mobil 1 0w-20 on sale with M1 filter somewhere for $30 and run that the manufacturer recommendation. No problems with the Honda running that oil and filter.

I picked up a K&N filter yesterday. Does anyone have experience with these, because I really don't. It was just a dollar more than the Mobil 1 filter. I could easily go back and return it for a different filter though.

Not needed. Plenty of Hondas going down the road for hundreds of thousands of miles and they don't use expensive filters like you have talked about.

Your driving style and easy climate is EASY. All 5w-20s are excellent. Really.. Its that simple.

Bill

Bill is right. The Hondas will run for a long time on just about anything, they are not picky engines. Since most of your driving is highway, the oil shouldn't be overworked.

Mobil 1 5w20 is a pretty safe bet. Your dealer will stock plenty of it. You can run a 7500 mile change interval without problems.

How do you know? Pulled the pistons out and looked at the ring lands?

That M1 0w30 will work for you too, I think the sale ends soon. Also I have a feeling Advanced Auto Parts will have some good sales this september and the Higher the quality of oil on sale comes with a good filter usually

Exactly...good gawd K&N is such a ripoff! Somebody somewhere is laughing all the way to the bank! Wish I had invested in them a long time ago! And ummm Yeah they may actually be less effective showing higher silicon in UOA's!

+1

Honda engines are easy on oil, it can even run with used vegetable oil discarded from restaurants.

Seriously, if you want to stay with OLM any conventional SM or newer 5W20 will be good. If you want to extend OCI to more than the OLM then you need synthetic and 0W20 or 0W30 is preferred.

M1 0w20.... would be my choice (recommended by Honda).

With your driving situation...8 to 10K OCI's...and a Purolator PureOne filter (about half the price of a K&N) should work well.

Could someone please educate me on the lingo, here?

OCI: I'm assuming this is Oil Change Interval

OLM?

UOA?

I understand and agree with what you guys are saying about K&N; I'll probably go return it today for a PureOne or something similar.

What about Royal Purple and AmsOil filters? I got this from another forum:
"Amsoil EAO and Royal Purple filters are the only ones that use the synthetic media that outflows, outlasts, and outfilters everything else."

OCI correct

OLM = Oil life monitor

UOA = Used oil analysis

Royal purple and Amsoil filters on the other forum...
