Please help me determine if my TL was wrecked.

You should make sure that your insurance company doesn't ding your rates later because your car was in an accident. Stranger things have happened with insurance companies.

Get a letter from the dealership explaining what happened stating that the car was in their care and that you had no involvement with the accident and you send the letter to the insurance company to go in your records. Keep a copy for yourself too.

Are you people serious with that theory?

I'm completely with you there! I'd think you'd notice right away when your spare key mysteriously doesn't fit anymore. FWIW, my 2008 Honda transmission has pen marker writing all over it, both sides of the split case, etc..

Believe me. It was made crystal clear who was responsible for that accident. been about 7 years and nothing's ever come back to bite me.

It is my car since all the keys and remotes work.

Another weird thing since you bring it up, glove box contents were in a clear plastic bag in the trunk.

A few towing companies will do that to keep everything together, esp if the doors are damaged (or windows) that people may get into the car. The glovebox is the first thing that the bad guys go through.

Interesting...

Interesting. I really appreciate your insight. I had to go out of town for work today, didn't get a chance to look at the trans VIN/serial numbers but I will tomorrow.

Some things I didn't include with the original post since it was getting kind of long...

This happened about 20,000 miles ago so it's going to be very difficult to pin anything on anyone. I know who did it if it got wrecked because it's the only time the car has ever been out of my posession for more than an hour. I just saw the wrinkling down the roofline on one side and it got me thinking agian. The car is going in the bodyshop some time in the next month to repair the minor front end damage from freeway abuse. I have an extra $500 set aside for the bodyshop to find areas that look wrecked. Even if I can't get some sort of reimbursement, it's worth it for my peace of mind (or not).

D'OH! Too late for any recourse now. That's why it's always important to do a thorough inspection of your vehicle anytime you pick it up from a bodyshop! Preferably it needs to be inspected in full sunlight, since that's the easiest way to spot problems.

There's way too much shadiness and sloppy work performed in shops (body and mechanical) throughout the US. The bad rep is somewhat deserved.

I've had some body shop woes on my car as well, I was about to take the body shop's manager to small claim's court as I had another mechanic who used to work at a body shop that could help prove that they did a shoddy job and didn't do what they were supposed to do, but I didn't have the finances or time necessary to do so and just had to live with it. Our Acuras don't get any justice with body shops, eh? Really sorry to hear about what happened to your car -- I feel your pain, my quarter panels are testament to that. The paint was poorly matched and is darker than the rest of the car and there was some poor prep work and I believe they only put one layer of paint on as I could actually see some spots around the wheel well that weren't even fully painted and I had to touch them up. Also, rust started bubbling up between where the bumper meets the quarter panel and it looks horrible -- wasted ~$1,000... a lot of money to an unemployed college student. He was supposed to put in some new metal and apparently just bondo'ed it, I made the investment thinking it would help prolong the life of my car as the rust was the only issue with it. There was also a lot of overspray that I had to deal with on the tail lights and he also messed up my rear bumper/light putting the rear bumper back on. He also used a poor fitting inner fender on my front right fender that was hanging down and had a hole in it, so I went to have it replaced and this one's hanging down too and won't stay up properly and scrapes every time I have a passenger in the car, extremely embarrassing.

Acura, BMW, Honda, Ferrari, Kia.....etc, etc.

Its just another car to the body shop employees. Its not like they are going to go out of their way to make it prefect as if it was their car being repaired.

If t was my TL, and considering the very high payment.....I would have gotten rid of that car long time ago. I'm not being a jerk, but with a $700 car payment + insurance and gas, I can't think of paying close to $1000 a month for an Acura.

$700, but for how many years? If it's a 3-year loan, then it doesn't seem to be too bad. A 5-year, then not too good.

I was paying $700/month for my car, but by doing so, I paid it off in 1.5 years.

It's not too bad considering I pay $84/month insurance for full coverage on both cars.

Loan is for 5 years but I've been trying to pay $1,000 a month when possible.

I can lease a BMW 335 for $530 but looking forward to owning the TL....if there's anything left by then.

Money is not the issue. I make decent money and no family to spend it on. If I weren't throwing it away on the TL, I would throw it away on the GN. I have 20% of my income going into the 401K and a decent amount, probably too much going into savings. If I do have a family one day, the TL will be paid off by then. It's more the point of the matter that I'm paying too much for the type of car and a potentially wrecked car at that.

The real unfortunate part of all this is the value of the TL will be seriously diminished. Having a little fender bender repaired is one thing. Having a major repair done poorly, and all these problems being noticeable is another. The car's current value simply isn't what it was prior to the body shop visit.

All this time later I don't know if there is anything you can do about it, but it does make a bad deal even worse and I'm sorry its happened to ya. It may be worth retaining an attorney if only to recoup some of the loss in value. Just a thought.

Try complaining to your insurance company about the c_r_a_p_p_y work, especially if they paid the bill.

Several years ago, I had a car in the body shop, and the end result was some really, *really* bad (and incomplete) work. The body shop had taken 4 weeks on a $3,000 job (and still wasn't done), and the insurance company was getting really tired of me being in a rental car.

I raised a stink with the insurance company to the point that they pulled my car out of the bad shop before they were even done, and the insurance company arranged with a second body shop to finish the work. They sent a tow truck to fetch my car, and take it to shop #2.

After digging into my car, body shop #2 determined that it would have to be torn completely down and all of the work would need to be redone. The insurance company paid for all of the work that body shop #2 did, and I got the quality of work that should have been done. Plus, shop #2 noticed that when they received my car, that each one of my nearly brand new tires had at least one trim screw imbedded in it. Luckily, they were all in the thick tread blocks and none required any repairs to the tires.

The adjuster from my insurance company told me that they would get even with body shop #1 for the horrible work that they had done on my car. Nearly everything had to be redone and/or repainted.

The insurance company made all of the arrangements with the 2nd body shop, I had no say on any of it. I was just thrilled that it was getting away from shop #1 (which was a Ford dealership body shop).

The manager of body shop #1 has since moved on to a dealership where I have bought vehicles in the past. I delivered the bad news to my salesman there, that I won't be buying anything from them, as long as that idiot is on the payroll there. I also told him that they must have been really desparate for a body shop manager, to have hired that idiot.

Understood. It's just hard to get another shop interested in that stuff. Obviously your ins co interviened on your behalf, and good they did,
