Over the course of the last month, I got to drive two econobox rentals: an '07 Nissan Sentra and an '07 KIA Spectra. Not sure whether it was because both were relatively new (little used and abused) or just that economy cars are nicer nowadays, but I actually liked them. My current point of reference is of course my E39, and while I like the combination of comfort and performance that it offers, sometimes I wish it was a few hundred pounds lighter, more agile, had better turning radius, and got a few more mpg.

I was most impressed with the Sentra - its nimble and precise handling, relatively good stability at high speeds, and nicely shifting CVT. I used to have the previous generation Sentra ('03) as a company car and didn't like it at all. This new Sentra is much improved in just about every aspect, including interior design and fit and finish. The exterior - well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so there's no point arguing about it.

The Spectra is a bit noisier and feels slower (despite also having a 2 liter engine like the Sentra), but it seems like a nice car, too. I'm sure it'd be more peppy with a stick shift. Whether it would make a good used car or last a long time without developing annoying rattles/NVH, I have no idea. This one has under 10K miles on the odo.

So, anyway, I am not ready to trade in my E39 just yet, but there is a part in me that is thinking a smaller commuter car with proper engine/tranny combo could be fun to drive, too.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.

FYI, I also had a Dodge Charger as a rental for a few days. The thing handled like a boat, just like I had expected it to. But that's a subject for a whole other thread...

The car that really took me by surprise when I re-entered the compact market was the Mazda 3. It didn't look, drive or feel anything like the compacts I owned before it.

Yeah, I test-drove Mazda3 last year and liked its handling, too. But I'd say the Mazda3 is a notch above Spectra and Sentra, both in terms of image and pricing. Or am I wrong?

MazdaSpeed3 would be super fun!

Base model Canadian MSRP's:

Kia Spectra LX - $15,995
Mazda3 GX - $16,795
Nissan Sentra 2.0 - $16,798

With air and cruise:

Kia Spectra LX Convenience - $18,195
Mazda3 GS - $19,995
Nissan Sentra S - $19,498

So the Kia is a little cheaper than Mazda and Nissan. Fuel consumption is a little higher in the Kia though. You also get 4-wheel discs, side airbags, and ABS for the extra price of the Nissan and Mazda.

The 3 IS an amazing car to drive. The only downfall is the A/C. It's completely pathetic cooling the car and also robs WAY too much power from the engine while it's on. Other than that.....GREAT car.

So far the average with the 2.0L and MT is just over 34. I do about 60%hwy/40%city. I baby the engine and get her in 5th gear by 40mph. I also do the speed limit or slower.

You should check out the Focus. One of the best handling economy cars available, and very inexpensive. I got my Focus ST for $14k, about $4k under MSRP. 14,000 miles later, I'm still loving it.

I've averaged 28.4 over the past 9100 miles. It picked up almost 3MPG over the first 5,000.

The 2.0L models give up a bit of power, 136 vs 151, but get a lot better fuel economy.

I know you don't mean to (do you?), but is there anything more pretentious than a BMW owner referring to his car by its internal factory code?

I don't think many folks (or at least I think nothing of it) would believe that's pretentious at all. It's very common in BMW circles (of course that may be where your comment is directed toward).

It's a simple way of identifying its age/body style/platform. It is not meant to be pretentious in any way. People use abbreviations all the time.

Using MBZ, BMW, VW and Porsche codes would normally be used only on forums for those vehicles, otherwise no one knows what vehicle you are talking about...
