Pit bulls and a kitty

It comes down to the owner. Some pit bulls are very clam and friendly dogs because they were raised properly. Raise them to be mean and they will end up that way. Dog behavior is probably more owner-influenced than it is for any other kind of animal.

Its all about how you raise them. I have 2 pits and 3 cats, 2 were kittens while the dogs were growing up so they are all friends. Some dogs do have a higher prey drive, and unfortunately sometimes you cant beat that. Although my golden retriever growing up bit three other dogs and was nearly put to sleep a few times. Go figure

1) Pitbulls are bred to attack without warning and to bite and rip.

2) Pitbull owners are either gangsta wannabes or in complete denial.

Plenty of dogs out there that don't maim. Pitbulls need to be bred out of existence.

I agree totally,,,,,,,,,everyday some kid or a small dog is attacked. They always say "how it was raised" total [censored] its in their blood.

I happen to know of a couple pit bulls that are very nice in my small town, I have yet to meet one that was just naturally mean.

But I can't wait to see how this turns out...

Is killing in golden retrievers blood as well? Or was it how they were raised?

Wait let me guess, isolated incident, never happens as often as pits, this is rare. They are aggressive breeds, but should all aggressive breeds be bred out? Prey drive and aggression are two different topics. Small dogs get bit because they are usually the attackers. How many times do you see little dog owners dragging their snarling yipping rat away from the larger dog owners who just walk by? Probably not many because its ignored, but other way around and everyones on top of it.

Chows are easy to predict... They are typically hard tempered dogs. Don't tread on them and you'll be just fine.

In situations like that, there are generally two contributing factors.

1.) The dog. It's bloodline and owner can have a heavy influence in the outcome of an encounter. If it comes from a long bloodline of poor breeding (read un-selective) and poor ownership then the dog can be very unstable.

2.) The child (parents). Many times but not always the child was doing something to instigate an attack. We humans see it as the dog was totally in the wrong and attacked precious little Timmy for no reason, but the dog sees it another way. Too many people try to put human logic into trying to understand a dog and why it attacked someone/something.

As for "Pit Bulls", they are something that I refuse to accept or acknowledge. They were created from a few terrier breeds for the purpose of fighting by unscrupulous people (and that's the nicest you'll ever hear me speak of those people). They are not even recognized by the AKC. In other words a mutt. Still, like any other dog, they CAN make an excellent companion in the right hands.

I also know some nice pit bulls. In fact, the majority of pit bulls I have encountered have been friendly dogs.

On the rare occasion I see a mean one, you can tell by looking at the owner and how they treat the dog why it behaves that way.

Dogs that are larger than my foot are a liability no matter what. Get too near me making me feel like I'm going to get bit and the dog is going down.

Plus, picking up a hot steaming pile is just gross. And stepping in it because you let them go in the back yard is worse. No thanks.

It's dogs like these that did it for me. No thanks, no dogs.

Pure, unadulterated cow manure!

edit: having grown up with almost nothing but large breeds, I can tell you that given a good bloodline and owner, a dog is often times more stable than the average human.

Hmm. Your talk of putting a dog down because it gets close to you is a bit worrysome. Maybe it's just Internet bravado, but if that's how you really are, I'd say that's a fair amount of liability right there. Hopefully whatever weapon you're alluding to is legally owned.

My lab/pitt mix has never threatened to bite anyone for getting too close. He just wags his tail and is generally grateful to have a home and a bed of his own. He is a fine companion and is as loyal and well mannered as the day is long.

You can make dog apologetics all day long, but no place do I see that there is a guarantee that I know that the dog is stable or not. I don't know where you or anyone else got their dogs from or what the qualifications you have on determining their stability.

If I have a small child or someone else that the dog may go after, it is YOUR liability, especially if the dog comes to my property.

I've been chased by too many large dogs when minding my own business to accept that. Whether walking down a sidewalk, bicycling in the street, etc. why should I have to bust my butt to escape or smile and accept the rapid charge of a large dog growling and coming at me? Seems like the dog owner expects some kind of free reign and understanding that im not willing to give. Not anymore. Been there, done that, got the injury.
