Here's my Husky 525LS trimmer that has 23.3 hours on it. It's been fed a steady diet of Husqvarna XP oil and 90 octane non ethanol gas at 45:1. The black carbon on the piston top, plug threads and in the exhaust port rubbed off fairly easily. What do you think?

Maybe 1/4th of the time. It will run 9500 rpm with doubled 7" .095 line.

Edited to add probably less than a fourth of the time.

plug looks great I think the lack of WOT is reasoning for deposits on piston tops looks ok with that said.

I pulled the plugs on my stihl trimmer and blower this weekend. They're 3 years old and get used probably 20-30mins a week and my plugs did not look anything like yours. Mine were pretty spotless, barely any carbon deposits. I use 91 E0 and the stihl ultra hp oil.

The trimmer is a month or so old so it gets used regularly. Husqvarna sets the carbs pig rich from the factory and I waited to burn several tanks before I leaned it out a bit. My Stihl FS94 came from the factory too lean and needed an immediate adjustment on the low speed jet.

The electrodes look fine, just too much carbon from idling plus a rather rich oil mixture.

I use Amsoil Sabre Professional synthetic 2-stroke oil and have for years. I'm just a homeowner but I do have 2 acres so my OPE are used much more than an urban lot. My equipment stays very clean. Amsoil recommends this oil at 80:1 for professional use.

Try Sabre Professional for a month at 80:1, take some fresh pics, and please post back.

For 23 hours, that looks terrible. Excess carbon build up like that will score the piston/cylinder walls. You may think that running it with extra oil is doing some good, but in this case, in this equipement, that is clearly not the case.

I'd stop using whatever oil you are using, and run it at 50:1. Try the Echo or Stihl oil.

Trimmers are not chainsaws. They don't need any extra oil.

Change the fuel mixture and run the next tank of gas at full throttle.

I just mixed up some ester based Woodlandpro Syn at 50:1. I'll see how clean that runs. I can't run this wide open most of the time due to trimming around vinyl siding and flowers etc. I'll run it WOT for 10 seconds or so before shutting it down. Thanks to all who responded.

I'm tempted to try the Amsoil Saber soon. My 2 cycle equipment doesn't get used very often, but I've seen a lot of 2 cycle machines lately that have scored pistons and cylinder due to excess carbon build-up. Usually from the owner mixing the gas with too much oil or using the "trimmer oil" no-name 2-cycle oil from sears.

They dont have scored pistons because of 3% mixture...but due to lean mixture....their carburator is set to lean...youtube "how to proper set chainsaw" and listen that part when tuner is talking about fourstroking with 2stroke engine

No I get that. I've been repairing small engines for over 10 years. I mean these were definitely cases where people had run like a 50/50 mix of oil. The mufflers were full of carbon, the piston was completely covered, etc. Obviously a 3% mixture won't do that, but being on BITOG I take things to the extreme like the rest of us.

You are searching that "sweet spot" when 2stroke engine sounds like fourstroke @WOT!

If your trimmer...chainsaw...has sound of coffe grinder @WOT....that sound means that you are just minutes away from scored piston...or even worst scenario!

That's about what my dirt bike looked like running 20:1, eventually the pipe got so clogged it lost power. After burning the carbon out though it ran fine. Probably had 400+ hrs on the top end though, so it wasn't all bad.

It would be more accurate to do it with a tach. Especially if it has a rev limiter. Tuning by ear is very hard to do with a rev limiter and you have to use a special tach.

Tuning by ear you want it to four stroke at wide open with no load but to smooth out when some load is applied. It is getting harder to tell when this happens on newer equipment when you get stratocharged or a cat involved.

Too much carbon for running so few hours. Use Stihl HP or Amsoil 2 stroke oil. Mix at 50:1 with premium gas. Run your trimmer at full throttle. Those little engines are happiest when running at full throttle. Good luck.
