Just had a thought ( yeah a rarity lol )

The big mall parking lots around here are often plowed by 2wd 3/4 ton
Pickups. And heavy snow at times.

a 2wd truck is useless in rocks, steep off camber hills or pulling off road toys out into the desert or beach.

That would be among the ~2% that might actually need 4WD.

98 % of two wheel drive truck owners would be fine with a Chevy Impala. They don’t really need a truck.

Unless they exceed the Impalas towing capacity or trunk size

The terms of the discussion were not defined and drifted between private owners and work. Let me add something about work. If you arrive on a construction site with your two wheel drive truck and get stuck you might not be invited to show up the next day or least the other workers will let to spin your wheels and have a good laugh before they pull yor POS off the work site.

That is the question.

Under certain conditions 4 wheel drive might save your life.

A gent here said it best. He had seen people get stuck for hours and the 4wd
owner who is in the Same situation just throws it into 4wd and simply pulls away.
We have all seen that! Being stuck in the middle of nowhere ain't fun!

Bet they have sanders in the back and are dealing with flat ground that isn't filled with rocks or potholes.

You have a point, but I'll counter it anyhow.

Yes that is true- But they do push a bunch of snow- wonder why most have 2wd?
In that situation 4wd may not hold up well?

Absolutely correct.

Right, because the Impala will move this.

Sometimes you guys are goofy. Here in Washington where it does not snow but once or twice a year in the low lands there are tons of 2WD drive trucks. If you are not off-roading or contending with snow you just don't need it here. I understand you live in the Northeast and I grew up there so yeah 4WD is useful. The past 15 years all I have had is 2WD trucks.
WTH are you guys doing with your trucks?

Ok I take it back.

I have heard this somewhere before.
"It's better to have it and not need it
than to need it and not have it".

There are 126 million households in America. The number of households that own an RV is 2.47 million or just under 2%, so no, it’s not RV ownership that drives truck sales.

Just remembered--most 4WD's are part time. Without a center diff turns get much harder, especially at lock to lock. So if they can get decent traction in 2WD then they are ahead of the game. That is one thing that bugs me on mine, lock to lock turning in the driveway.

Don't think it's about holding up well--yeah more parts to break but I don't think it's due to that. SWAG on my part I know.

Not getting stuck in snow and pulling out those who are.

Speaking on the subject, I picked up a 6x14 enclosed trailer to move stuff around. If I look for anything made in the last 20 years or so, what would move it and isn't a pickup or full sized SUV? [Since we're all hating on pickups right now I'm going to guess full sized, mid sized and small SUV/CUV's are next on the hate-list.] I presume the standard advice would be for me to a) drive the 30 miles to Home Depot and rent, or b) rent a UHaul for $100 a day.

Pulling a very heavy toy hauler in low-traction situations. I also plow my own driveway, which with 4wd and low-range is a breeze, without loading a bunch of temporary weight in the bed.

I’ve never owned a 4wd and never will and I have lived in Wisconsin or UP my whole life.

2wd - better fuel economy
You can afford to change the rear gear ratio
You may get away with cheaper plates
Cost of admission is lower
Parts and maintenance are lower
More reliable
In some states you can even put passenger plates on in certain circumstances (looking at the 2wd Suburbans we had)
Done right better tow rig

A little common sense and a 2 wheeler with posi’s is drivable in all seasons, you won’t win any races but who cares?
