The vin should give you an engine letter code also. According to my haynes for 1988 to 1998 full size trucks the 8th number/ letter is the engine code. N is for the 7.4 liter tbi and K is for the 5.7 liter tbi. The engine spec for the 7.4 is listed at 230 hp at 3600 rpms, 385 ft/lbs at 1600, 8.0:1 compression and 40 lbs of oil pressure at 2000 rpms. the 5.7 lists at 200 hp at 4000 rpms, 310 ft/lbs at 3100 rpms, 9.1:1 or 8.3:1 for heavy duty and minimum spec for oil pressure at 18 psi at 2000 rpms.
