Picked up an ICON T10

And can you use it right out of the box? Old high end scan tools do not need a battery to work they can use the cars battery through the OBD2 port. It would be bad to be using a tool with only its own source of power while doing a ECU update or what ever, and have the battery poo out during it. 😧
You can, but it has a separate supply so you can use if it is not charged. So in short you can use it both ways. On a power cord directly to the OBD II port or untethered. I do like the charging base. You can hook up the dongle and move around with the scanner. I really like it. Have you seen Eric O use it on South main auto? He is who got me interested in it. The fact that he really liked it was what made me look at it.

I want one that is pre registered if that is a requirement of operation of said tool, meaning not spending a half hour answering questions etc. I want one that I can turn off any wifi period, and only use a corded connection to the vehicle.
Is this one the ticket?

Took 5 minutes to register for warranty. Again it is a tablet you can turn WiFi off. I have not tried it yet because it will show common fixes on the web and that is how you access the repair data. You should check out South Main Auto. He talks about it has in a few videos. I literally had real time data on The Trans Am in less than 10 minutes from pulling it off the charger and registering for the first time. Clicked on the fault, got a diagram, and websites that talked about out of spec MAF voltage.

Here is a decent video of him using it.

You wont be doing anything except a little simple coding but no ECU or module programming, for that you may need programming power supply to the car as well as the programming capable scan tool with a VCI pass through, these tools are around 2K and up or use an OE tool. For older GM and Saab I still use the Tech2 to install modules.

Also, withholding labor times feels petty. You can provide wiring diagrams, component locations, diagnostic info.....all of which is TONS of info.....but then somehow providing a SINGLE NUMBER for operations is a bridge too far?? Really??????

You can get ALLDATA or Motors, they are expensive but IIRC you can one car for a month for not too much money.

For me this thing works well some of things that people would need are not required for someone like me. I don't mind paying the subscription (when this one runs out). I speed that a month in coffee. This particular tool will work really well for me as it is easy to use and read.

Yeah I've paid monthly subscriptions for Alldata DIY before. I think it's $10 for 30 days. I never dug into how deep it goes with certain things, but labor times were there IIRC

If HF could add Toyota I could overlook the lack of labor times. I've got numerous Highlanders, Venzas, Tacomas and Tundras in my life

I'm gonna check out Otofix next year :D

Its all a cash grab. I hate January when all the subscriptions for everything come in. I wont know what it feels like to stand up straight til Feb, I spend all of Jan bent over.

Alldata DIY for a month is $20. I have a year's subscription to it for several of my vehicles but I use coupons that they send me periodically to bring the cost down. It's normally $60 for a year. I use it a lot so the cost is worth it to me.

I have an Otofix D1 and while it gives a lot of information, mine is slow when connected to the vehicle and slow when updating the information on the scanner. My Thinktool Pros and Launch X431 a very fast in comparison. The higher end Otofix models may be faster but I don't know. The slowness of it is why I don't use it that much. I bought it mainly because I wanted to try out the Autel platform without spending a ton of money.

The T10 looks like a pretty nice scanner. I have watched Eric O use it quite a bit. He seems to like it for the most part.

The ProS, Max and others of the higher end tools are a different tool. The Pro has an 8 core processor and is faster than the D1 in every way and it is a 10" tablet.

So long story short we replaced Injectors on the boys 2003 LB7 Duramax. Pretty involved, but not horrible, get it all back together, it ran AWESOME for 45 minutes then goes into limp mode. P2146, P0202, P0203, P0205 and P0208. Shutting down a bank of injectors...no good. So we check all the wiring, injectors and various other items, all checks out. Couldn't clear the codes with my scanner. T10 cleared it. Found one of the newly installed remanufactured injectors have failed thanks to the T10. I should have paid more attention to the injectors he purchased. So now we are going to get a set from Lincoln Diesel. Hopefully the other company will make it right, but not holding my breath. So having worked on submarines for 30 years I understand the the importance of the correct test equipment and quality parts. Should have had a scanner like this years ago(helps with the parts cannon) and made sure my son got quality parts. One thing I learned is I don't want or need a diesel for the things I do. :)

For someone like me who does it as a hobby it is awesome, maybe too much. Eric owns a business and he seems pretty happy with it. I didn't think 1699.00 was unreasonable for how it functions.

Yes, I knew the specs of the D1 were not as good as the D1 Pro and above. I just didn't know how the speeds compared. I figured the higher end ones were probably higher. The D1 and D1 Lite are decent scanners for the price.

I do car repairs as a hobby as well. I have been doing it for over 40 years. I don't mind paying for quality tools and wouldn't hesitate to pay the $1,699 for the T10 if I needed another scanner. I have way more than that in all of the higher end scanners that I do own. I also own a lot of diagnostic tools and specialty tools because I like to fix as much myself as possible. I'm still learning on how to use a scope as well which seems to almost be a necessity these days on some of these electrical problems. Since owning these higher end scanners, I have been able to diagnose and fix a lot more things than I did in the past. It's definitely a game changer.

Wow, still no coverage for Toyota. I service several Toys. I'm not gonna drop ~$1600 plus a potential $300+ per year (yes, I realize these numbers are relatively modest in this world) to not have Toyota coverage. View attachment 256248

I'd sooner add to that $1600 to get something else. Glad I saw this in this vid (@ approx 21:50 -- but the screenshot above is directly from HF's website TODAY)

^also that guy was given the tablets so not unbiased at all

This has me holding off as well. 2 of the 3 cars I maintain are Toyota. Otherwise, one of these with 20% coupon would be tempting.

I see Toyota and even Ford is not supported with Motor TruSpeed with Autel tools either. The Icon and Autel tools do support Toyota and Ford just not the true tech stuff by motors. For me it is not great loss, as I have all I need on a laptop.

Anyone use the T10 with a newer "Chrysler" like a 2023 Jeep? If you bypass the secure gateway module (using a 12-8 cable or Tazer or ECRI or other device) can you use the T10 without an AutoAuth subscription and without an Internet connection? I have an Autel MS906BT that acts like the SGW is still present and won't do anything but read codes unless I buy an Autel subscription and am within range of wifi (or a cell phone hot spot).

Consider a 12+8 SGW bypass cable or Star connector bypass if you don't want to pay for an Autel TCP + AutoAuth
AutoAuth claims HF scan tools support MB/Stellantis/Nissan SGW

How's it treating you after the new tool smell wore off @ls1mike
Still recommend?
