Petroleum oil substitutes

I have heard of folks that have run Canola Oil right out of the bottle in the grocery store in their car.

not me...

There has been a lot of talk on here in the past about an oil called G-Oil, which apparently was quite popular, did decently well, and was based off of renewable, non-petroleum oil stocks. I myself have never used it, but I'm not averse to it.

I've also enjoyed reading about people using canola oil in their engines, but personally, I'm not sure if I'd feel comfortable running them in my daily driver, at least not quite yet. I'd have to see a lot more tests done, and under very controlled, scientific conditions. Add to that, the fact that even those who I've seen use canola oil in their engines on here, did not run PURE canola oil.. they ran a mixture of Canola and something like Rotella, so they at least had an add pack of some sort.

About 5 years ago a guy used it with his Audi that he modified for track days. He used the RL oil to combat fuel dilution along with the help of someone named Terry Dyson.

The UOA's looked really good. I ran the oil in my wife's 96 Volvo turbo wagon, also with good results until someone ran her through a guard rail at 70 miles per hour on 15 N in Escondido.

The oil performs really well but evidently no one here at BITOG ever tried it.

Check out some of the links to RI_RS4. He spent a lot of time and money on sorting out his oil needs.

IIRC Castor oil was used for racing back in the 50's and early 60's
in motorcycles.
Required tear down and heavy cleaning between races.
No additives.

Wouldn't anything made from Group IV or V base stocks fit this bill?
I thought those were synthesized from substances other than petroleum, but I don't know for sure.

I suppose, but even Group IV is made from what could be termed as fossil fuel. PAO is primarily made from ethylene gas which is primarily sourced from natural gas.

jojoba oil have a very long chain waxes and after esterification had been used by some manufacturers as substitute of sperm whale wax derivatives.

Depends. There are numerous sources for methane, including landfill capture of leaking methane, or even "fartpacks" attached to cattle.

There's this amphitheater in Mountain View, California that was built on what used to be a garbage dump. Most of the seating is in a concrete bowl, but the upper levels are lawn seating. They used to have issues with methane releases, especially when people were smoking on the lawn.

years ago as a young man I had to top my girlfriens car off with crisco. The thick white paste stuff that comes in a can (shortening). I was sleeping in the back of her blazer in winter as we were traveling through the utah desert. when the engine started clapping and shaking.
she woke me up and I checked things out. foundd she was about 3 quarts low of oil. there wasnt anybody gonna be comming by for maybe days as we were in a snow storm taking turns driving really slowly through the snow. all we had was crisco shortening. we had to keep going or we would freeze to death.
We went about 100 miles at 5 to 20 miles per hour. I changed her oil next day after we got there. Then we drove all the way to kansas.
That blazer lasted for another 15+ years after that.
she was still driving it when I left my home town for good 15 years later. Id like to look her up on fb or somthing sometime just to see how much longer she had it.
