This is the 4th time I've seen this: Outdoor AC unit obviously on and making noise, several windows in the house open.

Is there any reason other than "duh" that people do this? I can't think of any, but as I don't know everything, there exists the possibility that there is a logical, reasonable explanation other than stupidity/ignorance that people do this.

What's so unusual about it?? We waste half our energy in this country..forcing us to import almost half. Stores/restraunts are turned down so you need a sweater in the middle of summer, high intensity lights on at high noon in parking lots, turning out gas guzzlers like they are going out of style, refusing to consider conservation.... It goes on and on.

Wish I could laugh at the whole thing

It is indeed crazy but a recent article in the news repeated what I have read before........... TWO percent of the total energy in petroleum goes to move the body weight of the driver in one of todays motor vehicles.
How crazy is that?

We need a alternate form of energy ----- just so the people that live in sandy regions can go about the business of killing each other without the USA getting involved.

Maybe they have it on "Fan Only" and are conserving. Possibly they have set off some of the fumigator bombs and are airing things out?

Having the unit on fan-only does not run the outside unit.

Since our bathrooms are not equipped with exhaust fans, I open the window to exhaust the humidity when I take a shower. This allows the A/
C to run less to maintain the desired temperature. This is only one window, for a short period, however.

Perhaps they're just cooling off the main room (and it's closed up to keep it that way) and the rest of the house is not enjoying the cool air. Did they have A/C units in every window? It costs too much to run several units, let alone one unit. We used to do one-unit in the main room and keep it cool so at least we has some relief from the heat.

Hee hee!!!!!

Several responses above made me chuckle, snort, grin, guffaw and nod my head in agreement.

Next time you see it, Brian, yell into an open window and ask them. If they give you any crap, send the Department of Homeland Security on them for suspicious activity. Nah, there's really no other reason than "duh," unless you consider clogged filter and no freon to fall under some other category. Probably just forgot they have a thermostat somewhere set to 'AC on.'

The flipside of this is if they're a bunch of dope smokers. My relative's had next-door neighbors where they'd do weird things like that ALL the time..

slightly on topic (pretty unusual) are my inlaws.

Summer, and their house is set at a frigid 16 degrees celsius. Winter, and it's set at 25 or 26 celsius.

It's an absolute pain with kids when we go over for dinner. They are rugged up for winter evenings, enter an oven (I can't handle that sort of heat some nights), end up all rosy cheeked and half undressed, only to be rugged right back up again (in the heat), and then exposed to freezing temperatures agin.

When I ask why..."we like it that way".

(then we grizzle about the price of electricity...which hasn't risen for 5 years).
