I hate using those bags over the mirrors....the one and only time I used them I knocked my left mirror off when I backed out of the garage...couldn't see a thing!!

GREAT idea!

Never had a problem with a ziplock bag coming off. Just zip it up as tight as possible and so far it has always stayed. Have some heavy black plastic windshield covers that I've cut out of a large roll that I put under the wipers and close the doors on the ends. Even a small roll last a long time.

I'll admit I was unprepared for this storm...I had to stop by the liquor store on the way home from work on Friday to pickup some bourbon.

Some useful ideas here. We should keep this going.

The only thing I did last week was make sure my wife had new winter boots and snow shovel for the sidewalk.

A lot different than the last few mild winters many of us have had. I hope to get some good sledding in this year.

In after the edit time elapsed: taking a work break from a thinning project: Sledding with chainsaw chaps and hard hat on:

There's a huge difference between being unprepared, and not caring. How many times do you see a driver with a snow scraper scrape a small hole on the windshield and drive? Most people don't really care about safety for themselves or others.

Neighbor started down his drive today, and I had shake my head, as he left a big of snow on the truck. A car was coming, so he stopped; sure enough a big chunk came down onto the windshield. He sheepishly said that he guessed he should have cleaned it too.

What does he do? Cleans the windshield, leaving what was on the roof. And on the snowmobile trailer, then taking off.

People here are completely unprepared for snow, though it happens every 8-10 years. The last time was in early December a few years back. I was at work when it began falling. People were coming out of their offices like the groundhog emerging from his hole in Punxatawney, lifting their faces to it, etc. I told them in a deep Christopher Reeve-as-Superman voice, "Have no fear, citizens; this often happens on Planet Earth."

Fortunately it stopped soon, and there were no traffic issues. But when it snowed in late '89 and the stuff stayed on the ground for three days, we had drivers panicking all over the place. (Heck, the natives here can't drive properly in the dry, let alone the wet.)

As for ice scrapers, I must be the only denizen of Da Swamp who has one in his car. If their windows ice over, I see people using a credit card as a scraper all the time.
