DC area drivers are the worst. Used to think it was NYC, but dc drivers are just malicious and lousy. Especially MD drivers in that area. More run red lights and run stop signs in the last 6mo than I’ve seen in my life. More driving on the tail of the next car, high beams on. More speeding up when signaling intent, in order to close the gap. Really bad.

You can have a lousy or oblivious driver that higs a lane, stays along side you on the highway, uses the brake for no reason, etc.

Lots of folks drive maliciously.

The funny thing is I heard exactly what you say, from friends who moved from VA to MD. It seems that in VA there are “targeted” aggressive driving areas so I had the impression VA drivers are aggressive.

MD had speed cams long long ago and when I drove there even though 11 over was ok, I followed the limit to try to not make a mistake. I noticed locals know where the permanent speed cams are physically installed and sped up to it.

I actually like MD but maybe commuting down there would make me into Goofy in the cartoon 😡

Lots of places have targeted driving areas, and cams are more and more pervasive.

I don’t drive in VA as much. Though 95 through at least Fredericksburg is a nightmare.

Drive 295 or 395 in heavy traffic and it’s plain to see the range of horrendous behaviors.

Maybe just an observation.

Usually doesn't mean everyone who does it lives this way.

I do think you contradict yourself. If someone is unaware of their impact on those around them, are they not effectively living as if they are the only ones in the world?

At the very least, no indication they considered those around them when taking action.

It's one thing to make a mistake.

It's another to be staring at one's phone at a traffic light and not be aware it's changed and holding up those around them.

That latter is the sort of folks I'm talking about. Unconcerned with their impact on those around them.

Drove thru those areas once. Only once. The one time was plenty enough. Not only wild , race way type drivers , but just way more traffic than I am used to any place else.
 
Yesterday encountered the opposite of aggression. The car in front of me, came to a complete stop, in an attempt to let a kid on a scooter, cross a very very busy road. After about 90 seconds, I gently tapped my horn. When the car did nothing, I let it be. I didn't hold my hand on the horn, I tapped it. It's rather nonsensical to stop for 2.5 min, hold everyone up behind us, to let one person cross the road. Nice gesture--that's why I didn't do any more than try to remind the person you've got a ton of people backed up behind you. It's pretty wild trying to keep traffic flowing smoothly, too many things preventing that from happening.

btw is that scooter a pedestrian? If so, they need to cross as such where there would in fact be a signal and crosswalk. If not? It's a car, and simply has to wait until it's safe. imho there is no stop sign so the above person was very nice, but detrimental to everyone on the road....
 
Happened today. Nobody on the road except me in right lane, F350 on left. I want to get behind him so I take off from a light and only go 20 mph steadily in a 35. He goes 20. So I speed up to 30. He goes 30. So on and so forth up to 60, at which point I simply signal and change lanes. He honks and flashes his lights. I really think many folks want a confrontation. Welcome it and are seeking it.

All I wanted to do was to change lanes, and hung back to do so. Whatever.

Carry momentum, a good pass should be like a knock-out punch. Catch them off-guard and make it unblockable.
 
I've driven over 2,000,000 miles in my driving career and I will always tap the brakes if I see someone wants to get in front of me. Also for passing on a two lane.
 
The topic of this thread is valid and reliable in 2025, as it was in 1976, when I remember my uncle cursing when this happened.

I lose my desire to do so, but I really should save the video from the front and rear cams.
 
I've had better luck with this lately. I think people just don't get you much room to change lanes is all
