Terrifying BMW lane assist problem

I can override the lane keep assist and the super cruise in my Tahoe with one finger. I'm very surprised the BMW system can exert so much force.

It litterly tried to rip the steering wheel out of my hands! It took all I had to pull the wheel to the left to avoid hitting the stopped Tesla.
Sounds like you panicked more than anything. These systems usually have choices for what it does. Some will simply beep, others will vibrate the steering wheel, etc. Was there an oncoming vehicle by chance ?
I assume the system in the BMW must have a bad sensor or whatever and it did not "see" the stoppd Tesla .
Unlikely. How would it differentiate from a parked car (even if it's sticking out into the lane) ?

This is the issue I have with these systems. I'm curious how difficult it would be to prove there was an issue with the sensor and the system intervened in the wrong way AFTER an accident has already occurred. I'm thankful the OP was able to overpower it, but we all know how the average driver would probably react.

So we get to be the beta testing that can cause lives lost?

The infants are the engineers and marketers.
We are always the guinea pigs. Having said that, no human can see in 360*. But they can text, play videos, adjust the radio, scream at the brats, drink and do a bazillion other things while driving.

When I was working, I used to code in my mind's eye while navigating Silicon Valley traffic. FYI coding takes concentration; focus. I must be amazing!

Drove a loaner X3 while they performed the Vanos bolt recall on our 5 Series. I was amazed how much force it took to overcome the lane control, and I'm a big guy who works out. It was just one of those going around a car turning into a driveway so I didn't use my blinker. It was crazy. I would definitely turn that feature off.

In consideration of Chris's strained relation ship with off-brand Euro cars I am convinced the ghost in the machine can sense the animosity and is trying to take Chris out, whether it is via boiling hot oil during a service or with a road "accident." 👻

I was really expecting something more thoughtful and illuminating. Not self serving drivel from the foremost advocate of EV technology.

I've turned off everything possible in our Tesla. When I attempt to change lanes without signalling, or put a tire on the lane marking line the steering wheel pulsates, but that's all.

One time my 2000 BMW saved my bacon when someone blundered into my lane, right in front of me. I was going about 80 km/hr (50 MPH) and there was a deep ditch on the side. I made a snap lane change and just missed him/her before swerving back into my lane. I'd like any vehicle to let me do that in an emergency.

Look up the "moose test". That test is pretty much the situation we're both describing. The Tesla Model 3 performed quite well.

Not sure I understand your comment, but if you are referring to my programming stuff, I was adding myself to distracted drivers. Not good.

with the blinker on the lane keeping assistant wouldn't engage. like you supoosed to do when changing lanes
But what if someone has to swerve around an obstacle or person? These systems should stop at gentle nudging. A bad sensor should be self-diagnosed and shut the system down, not let it hobble along doing stupid things.

My Prius Prime was doing this when I drove home from the dealer in potentially freezing rain so I couldn't tell if the car was "loose" or what. I later found out they didn't PDI it and there was still 47 pounds in every tire (to prevent flat spots.) I turned all that nanny junk off. I'll cross the yellow line a bit to go around a right turning car if the coast is clear but the robot doesn't play along.

no other cars on the area at the time. Im no spring chicken, i often lift 60+ lbs with 1 arm but i had to really put my weight into the steering to fight it. Like nothing I have ever seen. I seriosly thought I was going to hit the stopped car. I was going 40 in a 45, went over a hill to see a car partially in my lane. Had to cross a double yellow to pass it, as soon as I was near the rear of the stopped car the car i was driving tried o put me back in the correct lane.

No other way to explaine it.I was not speeding and moved into the other lane well ahead of the stopped car.

As others have suggested, it would be great to report your experience to BMW. You just might be stopping someone's accident.
