The ‘24 Tacoma uses a variable space that seems biased by speed. More specifically it feels a lot like closing time, eg, the faster the speed, the larger the distance between vehicles. Slowing to a stop, it allows vehicles to get closer and closer. It’s one reason I find it useful at times in stop/go. It’s pretty natural - and would be superior to a fixed distance algorithm. Where it falls apart is near merge lanes in heavy traffic - which it can indeed handle, but it doesn’t communicate intentions well with “body english.” To other drivers - it doesn’t anticipate what they might do or need and doesn’t know how to be courteous. So, in those kinds of situations I won’t use it, even if it can more or less handle the single vehicle itself.
It's doing a lot of math and yes, it factors in your speed vs other vehicle's speed. If you've ever had someone pass you, but then pull back into your lane, if they're going fast enough, your car generally won't react (nor does it need to).
