Rental F150, strange cruise control behavior?

So I flew to southern CA today and picked up a late model F150 rental for the week. I was driving up the 101 and three times I had the cruise set in the mid to upper 60's when all of a sudden the truck started accelerating. Each time, when I looked down, the dash indicated the cruise was now set to 80. In my mind, this was very odd and should not have happened. Anybody out there with a late model F150 ever have this happen to them?

Disclaimer: My newest vehicle is a 2011 so I'm not used to all the electronic bells and whistles with radar and lane assistance...

My 22 F150 does the opposite. When I have the cruise control on between 60-70, about twice a month it completely shuts off- and an error message pops up on the dash. I’ve had it in twice to get it rebooted. Works fine for a month then recurs.

No error message on the dash for me.

I found it odd that each time it set itself to exactly 80 mph.

It did display a little speed limit sign beside the speedometer! I'll have to scroll through the settings to see if there is a +15 setting.

Mine does this all the time. I live off of State Highway 75, which is generally a 45mph or 50mph road... if I turn on the adaptive cruise, the camera will try to set the cruise to 80mph (as I have a 5mph tolerance). Same thing on Interstate 45, while going 70mph, the camera recognition will randomly try to set the speed to 50. Just a minor annoyance, but a good reminder to actually pay attention to your speed!

So the speed limit recognition is based on the vehicle reading the road signs? I just figured the little icon came from GPS data as I was using Android Auto at the time.

No, the camera can read street signs.

The Highlander has road sign assist, but it only returns a warning lights and buzzer. It doesn't effect throttle or braking. You need to be grossly exceeding the speed limit for it to trigger. It also recognizes Do Not Enter, Stop and Yield signs.

Did it have speed limit sign recognition turned on? I think you can set it for a certain mph over the speed limit and it will adjust as the speed limits adjust. I turned it off in my Raptor.
I did confirm this was this issue. Speed limit was 65. Recognition was turned on with a +15 tolerance.

So does the truck pay the ticket and take the OL points?
LOL.

I was thinking about safety and subsequent lawsuits. What if it set the cruise over speed limit and it was engaged at the time of a fatal accident?

And the people who want to save the environment probably would sue too. Considering some on the left are working to outlaw gas appliances, I'm surprised they haven't pushed to have vehicles cap the speed at exactly the posted limit.
