Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w-40 arrived

Curious, I have used PU off and on for a few years, as that is what the dealer puts in my Ferrari during a service (previously Shell Ultra Helix, same stuff), and I always would notice it foamed a lot on the dip stick. In between major services, I would change the oil myself and use Mobil 1 0w-40 and it did not foam. I had a major service earlier this year, and noticed that PU doesn't seem to foam anymore...perhaps they changed the formulation?

Have any of you noticed the oil foamy or bubbly on the dip stick? Obviously not a good property for oil to have...

I haven't.

It is unique to Ferrari! There is a lot of talk about that, it could be that in Europe Ferrari is using 10W60 Shell, and here PU 5W40.

Yes they did. They move from Group III base stocks to PAO base stocks.
It is much more hardcore oil, I would say looking numbers, best one out in the market.

Not PAO but GTL, I think.

I thought I read on the pds it is PAO. Going to check.
Checked:
2. COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
Mixture of Polyalphaolefins and additives

Yes this oil is heavier than the SM version it has replaced. And due to it's 5W rating and much lower VI will be heavier on start-up at all temp's verses M1 SN 0W-40. On balance I consider M1 0W-40 to still be a superior oil.
And yes Shell has switched to GTL base oils for most of their PU line including this oil.

Ordered for my father's X5. Amazon had it under Warehouse Deals for $36 for 6qt case- 'Used- Like New- packaging may be slightly damaged.' Let's see how that turns out.

I saw that. It's usually in that range for subscription. However I'm not going subscribe to get the price and then cancel. What goes around comes around.

I thought I saw in PDS it says PAO???

I assume you're referring to the MSDS, and those aren't necessarily that accurate in that respect. Handling a fire or spill of a PAO oil or a Group III+ or III or II or I is much the same, so while a technical violation, no enforcement officer would ever concern himself with it.

Well Shell says PAO but you are "for sure" it is GIII?
I will take them for a word.
In such a competative market I just do not see why Shell would lie about PU 5W40?

No, I'm just saying that just because the PDS says something like that doesn't mean it's true, and we've run across that several times here. And it's not exactly lying, either. It's not something really for public consumption, at least from a marketing perspective. If it used to be PAO and has been changed to GTL, or had an intermediate step as a Group III, those scenarios wouldn't surprise me. Or, it could still be a PAO oil.

Nonetheless, to be perfectly blunt, I've seen a few serious whoppers on Shell data sheets. For the longest time (perhaps it's still true today), Formula Shell conventional PDS and Formula Shell synthetic PDS indicated that both products had the exact same properties and identical wording. As you say, in such a competitive market, I don't see why Shell would lie about a 5w-30.

With the large drop in NOACK from the SM to the SN 5W-40 (6.9%) there is little doubt that the oil is now being formulated with GTL base stocks. Shell has spent billions on the Qatar GTL refinery and are the only major using GTL at present. GTL certainly rivals PAO.
I don't thing Shell uses PAO in any formulation to day.

In that twitter chat earlier this year SOPUS stated they use both GTL and PAO; however, I agree with CATERHAM that it would make the most sense for them to use GTL based on their refinery output. Unless of course they're not able to achieve the desired final product with GTL alone and are forced to blend in a little bit of PAO, too.

Ferrari recommends 5w-40 world wide for most of their cars. 10w-60 for track sessions

Just to add to this and confirm. I just received a case today from Amazon. Production date on bottle was listed as July 30, 2013, and the labels are still the older SM labels.

I guess they are trying to use all of the old labels first!

Just thought I'd let you know and like I said we received a fresh shipment this week.

Sounds like they expected to sell a lot more of this stuff and overshot by a mile.
