Yeah, it hasn't been seen out in the wild yet. All we know is that API SN spec sheet exists, but that's about it. They're probably starting production now for all we know.

In Australia Shell Helix Ultra SM is among the cheapest synthetics availabe at any major parts store. I have not seen the SN version though, yet.

I forgot if I asked you already. Did you ever check at NAPA to see if they could bring it in at a reasonable price (or at all)? We do have a Shell pseudo-distributor up here, but I've never walked into the place.

Not NAPA, but one of our other price stores. They could get it, but it had to be ordered by the skid....

Yep, a skid might be a bit much, even for a BITOGer.

Apparently, NAPA can get at least some of the Ultra, but you know how our NAPAs are. The pricing is all over the place. Valvoline for prices that spanks Walmart, Eneos at sensible prices, and everything else double what it should be.

As I noted in my earlier e-mail, the version I got from Amazon was SM.

Thanks!

I'm sorry I don't have more information that this.

It would seem as though the official distribution warehouse may have SN?

Guess we'll find out soon enough

If that's the case, I'll order two more cases from them and probably run the SM stuff in the 328i or something.

No one has brought a concern because no one is as anal as a typical BITOGer.

In all honesty, if they sell it by the case, they would never know if it's SN or SM because it doesn't say that on the case. What they should do is locate a case with the most recent MFG date, open it up, and see if that one is SN or not.

Also, GF-5 is a fuel economy spec. PU 5w-40 has nothing to do with it.

So, it looks like the much desired SN-spec Euro oil is not in production yet.

My package arrived from Amazon today. Ordered it Monday and used the free shipping, 3 business days ain't bad. Might have been two but my order processing was delayed one day while I updated my payment information.

It is SM, made in September 2012. It's going in my Saab on Saturday.

All of the Napa outlets here in the MTL area have the PU Euro 5w-40 in stock, but its old stock that hasn't moved in awhile so its the SM version. I think the last time I was there was a few months back and it was about $11-12/bottle. Cheapest I've found it locally. They even had a bunch of Lubro Moly 5L jugs of various viscosity too.

Just thought I'd let you know and like I said we received a fresh shipment this week.

So it looks like the stuff I have IS SN, but labelled as SM

LMAO!!

I wonder if VOA would show any differences. Viscosity wouldn't necessarily show any differences, but if SOPUS tweaked the add pack (not sure that they did) in this SN version, then it would show.

On the other hand, I had a VOA done a while back on the SM stuff, but some members suspected that it was still the old PP Euro SL stuff with a new label on it because it was so much thicker than what SM was supposed to be. So this actually would have been the opposite tactic: using new labels but old oil formulation.

That's actually almost acceptable, considering individual litres were going for more than that at WM when it did have it. Perhaps they should advertise sales on it in the NAPA catalog once in a while, instead of alternating between NAPA and Valvoline labelled products.

Legally, I would think that it is fine to sell SN in an SM bottle, but not vice versa. If they are selling SN in an SM bottle, that means someone in the supply chain ordered way too many bottles too close to the changeover to SN. I wonder where they are working now...

Overkill, I just ran across something strange. I was playing around and checking pricing of oil on the U.S. Amazon site, as you did; I was curious about the shipping. For the heck of it, I checked what shipping would be on M1 EP, since a 6 pack of EP was only like twenty cents more than normal M1. Well, the shipping was appalling, bringing the oil to around $13 a quart, whereas the oil was only $8.55 a quart, which, as you know, would be fantastic price up here. They would ship it here, though. No, I didn't order it. I was curious, not nuts.

I decided to go through the same procedure with vanilla M1 5w-30. They would not ship that to Canada, with the same warranty blah blah blah explanation they gave when I tried to order filters. So, you can order PU and I could order M1 EP if I were so inclined, but M1 is a no-no?

Just wanted everyone to know, I have been running Pennzoil Ultra European 5W-40 for almost 2 years.

My local CarQuest orders it in, the part number is different from the American One.

I just walk in and tell them I need this part number 550025270.

Never had a problem obtaining it, just picked up a bottle last night to top up, usually sits on the shelf in the back until I come in and buy it the box.

Quattro Pete,

I have a good deal going on with my local store, they sell it for around $12.00 a bottle but always drop the price for me to $10.00 as I have receipts from day one showing what I paid for it so they match the price every time.

Regards,

Tom
