In Walmart yesterday, I walked down the oil aisle just to see what all they had, and, looking at one of my regular choices, PPPP, I noticed that all the varieties had an emblem on the label that I have not noticed before, that says, "Reformulated for Turbocharged Engines" or something to that effect. Then, looking at QSUD, I noticed that it also had a similar emblem.

When did they start putting that emblem on these SOPUS products, and what are the changes that were made? I went out to my garage and looked at a PPPP jug that I bought within the last year or so, and it doesn't have it.

Basically, that symbol means it meets dexos1 Gen 2 which means that calcium has been lowered to prevent LSPI....usually magnesium is raised to compensate for the lower calcium. Just because your jug of PPPP doesn't have this symbol doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't meet the new dexos1 G2 spec ….I'm pretty certain they met the spec. for a while before putting that symbol on the container....

They only meet d1G2 if that dexos symbol is displayed. The new, "for turbo protection" additional emblem was used on containers sold prior to the oil brands being allowed to place SN Plus in the donut. They wete allowed to do so sometime in May. Some may still be using some variation since it probably helps sales.

Again, its an SN Plus connection, not d1G2. It just came about during roughly the same time.

An oil can meet SN Plus and not d1G2 as the GM spec is more stout i.e., d1G2: (0w20, 0w30, 5w20/30, LSPI, oxidation, timing chains...), SN+: strictly for LSPI protection.

So 10w30 had the Dexos approval has well??

That was not accurate. Only 5w and 0w can do that I believe.

No, the 10W-30 does not have Dexos.

Yes, the "Redesigned for turbochargers" badge means the oil is API SN Plus for both Pennzoil Platinum and Quaker state. These SN Plus sopus oils have been out since June or July so it's been on the market for some time now. SN Plus motor oil replace a lot of calcium with magnesium. Mostly to prevent low speed pre ignition iseues in newer direct injection engine. I used this oil in my 1988 Civic. I did not get it analyzed so I would not know how it performed on a molecular level but in real life, it's just like any other full synthetic I have used, works smooth and flawlessly. My car is 30 years old so the LSPI does not apply to my engine, mostly the newer ones. I have no problem using it again in my car.

Thanks for the clarification. I know that Mobil1 met the spec. long before it came out....I guess I 'assumed' (wrongly) that SOPUS did for a short time before too....

I bought jugs with that emblem on them last year.... Kinda takes away from the nice Pennzoil labels :P

Hi John,

The emblem you're seeing reflects Pennzoil products meeting the API SN PLUS specification. The updated packaging featuring the new API SN PLUS Donut began to hit retailer shelves across the United States and Canada in Early May. API SN PLUS is a new motor oil specification developed for turbocharged engines that is being developed in response to automakers request for motor oils that protect against Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI). LSPI is an engine condition known to occur in Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection (TGDI) engines that can be mitigated by changing the motor oil formulation. Let us know if you have any other questions about the new SN Plus specification or check out our website here: https://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/education/know-your-oil/what-you-need-to-know-about-api-sn-plus.html

Thanks!

What are Pennzoil's plans for PUP (PPPUP) regarding SN +? I have a TGDI engine I believe (Ford Ecoboost 3.5). Am I better off with non-Ultra?
