Pennzoil Platinum and keeping engine clean

I've been a longtime user of Mobil 1 for many years in several cars. On my past car (before it's untimely theft), I've used Mobil 1 for all of it's life and when I took the valve cover off at over 100K miles, the cams, rocker arms, etc all were squeeky clean.

Now with the less availability of Mobil 1 5w30 (couldn't find any 5qt. jugs at my local wal-mart), I'm going to be trying Pennzoil Platinum. Now since Platinum's EOP base oil's properties are touted as being similar to Mobil's PAO and also Pennzoil's additive packs, could I expect the same engine cleanliness with Platinum as I did with Mobil 1's Tri-Syn and SS?

I think this EOP is the greatest coup in our contemorary lubrication offerings. Up until now (I think) XOM has had the keys locked on their catalyst processes and made anyone that wants to drink from the magic fountain ..pay the piper. This EOP thingy appears to do an end runaround and threaten the pole position that they've held for a long time.

Now if they can just market it a the alleged savings that the new process affords and get people to buy it

I've switched to Pennzoil Platinum in 2 of my vehicles (from Mobil 1 EP). Partly based on price (i.e $1.99 after rebate). Partly based on unavailability post-Katrina.

I'm going to go to 8K OCI's instead of 10K the 1st few times. After that I'll do a UOA on both cars to see how it did. I have a hunch it will do just fine.

Has anyone noticed the current pricing of Pennzoil Platinum? Today, Mobil 1 seems to be about $5.50 a quart and Mobil 1 EP even more. Pennzoil Platinum is priced about $4.50 a quart. That's a much better attitude than Castrol Syntec group III for the same price as Mobil 1. If this pricing attitude continues, I'm sure that Pennzoil will gain some followers.

I too bought some Pennzoil Platinum for $1.99 a quart after rebates. For that price, it would have to be an exceptional oil. That's what I paid for MaxLife synthetic when AutoZone blew it out, and I'm very pleased with it's performance. Pennzoil Platinum is probably still better oil.

As long as I can find $1.99 a quart premium oil, I'll keep using it.

Exactly Big Jim, i would be using reg oil but right now I have about a years supply of some great syns and semi syns to use !

I'm running PP hard in a GMC Truck in a cold climate and approve of it. Was running GM oil - will run just PP or M-1 Syn from now on...

Here in this province of eastern Canada, Walmart's price for Pennzoil Platinum is much better than the price of Mobil 1 at any store.

That is a concern I have. After about 3K of this OCI, my S-10 dipstick is still somewhat clear using Platinum. It never has done this before -- with any oil I tried.

Maybe this EOP stuff protects fine but keeps a partial film over the add-pack agents that are supposed to act like detergents.

I dunno.... I'm just a oil study student.... probably half-way to high school with oil-smarts (5th grade)...

How do you know that Castrol Syntec is still group III?
Judging by the UOA's and newest VOA's Castrol is as good or maybe even better than Mobil 1.
Cheaper too. It is regularly priced at $4.99
I don't understand why you guys still look down on Castrol.
AutoZone regularly puts it on sale at $3.99
At that price any Syntec not just GC is a bargain, especially compared to overpiced Mobil 1.

Off topic but i noticed when i switched to amsoil series 3K even at 3500 miles it was starting to turn alittle color but almost brand new. I know we shouldnt go buy color but im courious what a uoa will tell me.

I also noticed (before I even found this great site) the PP oil in my truck with 5k on the oil, is not as dark as ALL the other dino oil changes.

Hummm...

I'm do for an oil change here within 200 miles. I'm really considering PP 5w30 and continuing my use of LC. I think that should be a pretty nice combo,,,,,op

Funny about this topic. I just bought PP 10W-30 today from Advance. With their rebate offer the net price is $2.08/qt. That's a great deal compared to almost $6.00/qt for M1.

This is my 1st diversion from GC in 2 years. We'll see how it goes but I'm sure the PP will be more than fine.
