With no work today (snow), I decided to do something useful: went to the passport office and spent $65 to get a passport card. Should get it by mid-April.

Our drivers licenses are "enhanced" and allow us to drive across the border to the U.S. but passports are required to fly to the U.S. or outside of Canada so no "passport card" is required.

That said most traveling Canucks have a passport and now you can get a 10 year so it makes the cost not terrible at all amortized over that period.

Chart is here:

It would be useful for other purposes like proving citizenship when you're stopped near the border and asked for your papers. The border patrol always had the right to check immigration status within 100 miles of the border, but I believe that also includes the water so they can go 100 miles inland from the water. That has happened to a few people I know, they ended up at a checkpoint that had never been there before in years past.

Why get the passport card and not the passport itself?

My wife and I have passport cards. I've never used mine. My wife uses hers as ID at casinos. Sometimes they ask her what state it's from. She's say "New Jersey". They write that down.

Only reason is doing a motorcycle trip into Canada, this year or next. My uncle thinks he finally got his straightened out for riding with his father to Alaska in August-good thing he started in December, because it was way more hassle than it should have been. (His original birth certificate no longer exists.) My wife got hers done last year-a bit more trouble than mine, because she was born in Cuba, and has TWO legal name changes to deal with.

If anyone ends up travelling a lot, Global Entry is well worth it. Comes with TSA precheck and makes going through customs/immigration a breeze.

I keep saying I'm going to do that but never do it. I have TSA precheck. I hate waiting in line to reenter the country.

Fair enough, but jeez, that would seem to limit your travel options somewhat.

I regret not getting the passport card too when I renewed my passport.
You can also get a duplicate passport in case one gets "left behind" somewhere. I think that's still the case.
You can pay for the expedited process but it still takes longer than quoted but imagine how long it takes if you don't do it!

On my second extra passport … (not duplicate = second number) …
Those have gone from 2 year to 4 year.
They no longer sew pages in either … so selected an extra page option on the 10 year I just ordered

Good to know, thanks for clarifying.
