A friend of mine has a '91 Passat that is low on P/S fluid. I checked at one of the local parts stores and the book stated that the store did not carry the fluid for this car. I asked the parts counter guy to be sure, but he was no help at all. He simply stated that generally (american car) power steering fluid works in all makes of cars including this VW. Never being one to take the word of a parts man, I simply told my friend to go to the VW dealer.

Anyway, what type of fluid does this car use? And is it available from any other place than the over priced dealer. All my vehicles are old american iron, so I am not used to these imports with all there unique fluid requirements.

For a '91 model I would use Pentosin CHF 11s. This is found at most European Import parts stores or on the internet.

Thanks for the info. Is that the fluid that VW recommends from the factory? What would have happend if standard power steering fluid was used in this VW?

I would use the Pentosin as recommended. At worse you could cause some damage to the seals, pump, etc.. IMO, it's not worth it because having owned a VW I know those parts are $$$ to fix.

Yes, that is the fluid that is the factory fill, at least in my Passat it was.

That's what I was thinking, that the improper fluid could cause damage to the seals and pump. I will pass this info on to my friend. Thanks for the help.
