Which lab is recommend for particle Analysis?

I am going to run a little experiment in my recently acquired GX460.

Factory fill (50k miles) vs Magnefine + drain and fill.

The results are obvious, I would like to quantify the differences.

Id figured it would be OAI through Amsoil, but wanted to get better direction. As I know Blackstone isn't reliable enough based on comments here.

I wish Blackstone were better, but that is not the case. There are better options, and Blackstone is not 1 of them.

As we are getting closer to the end of my OCI, inquired with OAI about the partical test.

Engine oils tend to be too dark for the instrument to provide accurate results

Unfortunately OAI can't do dark fluids. My ATF is pitch black! They use ASTM D7647.

That's almost 4000 lumens bearly lighting this fluid up hah!

It appears Blackstone also says the same thing

This test cannot be run on used engine oil because it tends to be dark, which disrupts and the laser beam sensor.

So it looks like this experiment may be over unless I can find a lab that uses a different method.

Speediagnostix does particle count on a UOA for a $40 upcharge. I’m not sure if that’s the same service as what you’re looking for when you say particle analysis.

Sweet! That should be what I am looking for they use the Pore Block method not the laser type. I shot them an email to confirm.

I’d use WearCheck in NC. HPL trusts them as their third party analysis; if you’ve seen HPL’s lab, and HPL trusts WearCheck NC… IMO it’s a place you can trust to deliver the most exacting results available. Buyer beware, however, with some other labs mentioned here…

Thanks unfortunately they confirmed it would be too dark for them.

I'm not sure what a simple particle analysis would show, I would think you'd want to know what the particles are. This would take something like SEM/EDX.

The laser method gives you a breakdown , looks like the pore block method would just yield an ISO code.

I need to study some of the oil filter testing that was done here (GeorgeCLS) to see what I should end up doing.

Simply want to see the delta between adding the Magnefine filter (nominal 25 microns) filter to the system. Not as interested in anything else.

I am about to do a full system exchange with about 16 quarts.
