Paper filter elements and stiffness

I've cut open a few filters here and there but I've never taken the media off of the center section before. Well, tonight I decided I'd try to since I wanted to see the results of the Auto-RX I'd used.

I was quite surprised at how stiff and brittle the paper element was! Is this normal? I would think that a paper element would be a bit more flexible and not quite so brittle. I started to apply pressure with the knife and it just broke through without cutting.

With this oil change I've changed to Amsoil SDF filter so I hope this one is better.

Anyway, I just wanted to find out if this was the norm.
