I called the ExxonMobil Industrial and Commercial Lubricants product technical information line today.

Interestingly, the menu said that for Mobil 1, I should contact some other number. But that was OK, as I wanted to get the base-oil information on the Toyota 0W-20 SN synthetic.

She told me that any information on the oils marketed under non-Mobil brands is private and can't be disclosed and I should contact Toyota for that information. Fair enough I guess.

Then, I wanted to give it a try and asked about the base oil in Mobil 1. She immediately said "PAO -- poly-alpha-olefin." Then, I asked whether it had any Group III in it. She went silent for a while and did some research. When she came back, she said no, it would be a synthetic blend if it did. Well, take this with a grain of salt. For example, we know that Group III can be legally labeled synthetic. But, in any case, this was some evidence that Mobil 1 may still be a PAO-based truly synthetic oil.

If you can get the performance spec's like MRV and NOACK that will tell you more about the base oil quality than anything else. Mobil 1 0W-XX oils contain more PAO than their 5W-XX oils which likely use more than their 10W-XX oils.
Mobil will not use any of the more expensive base oils than necesary to acheive the set performance targets. If it can be accomplished with a GP III oil of course that's what they'll use.

ExxonMobil's UK-made Visom Group III+ base oil would be sufficient to blend SN/GF-5 0W-xx fully synthetic oil without any PAO, as the NOACK is less than 15%. You could also blend dexos1 5w30 with it (NOACK less than 13%) but it would probably be hard to be mix a 0w30 with NOACK less than 13%, as the 0w30 requires mostly 4 cSt oil in the mix (Visom 4cSt NOACK 14.8%, 6 cSt NOACK 8.0%). But then 0w30 can't be licensed and therefore is not tested for dexos1; so, the 15% SN/GF-5 limit applies to it.

Toyota Genuine Motor Oil. The version sold in US is made in US by ExxonMobil.

Yes, that's a very recent change and that's why. It's explained fully in the other thread. Basically GM initially licensed it only for 5w30 and they said that they planned to license it to other SAE grades in the future. Now, they started doing so very recently. Read the other thread for more information.

Group II+ dino, like all conventional 5w30.

10W-30 can be formulated with Group II+ dino, Group II dino, or a mix of Group II/II+ dino.

The only synthetic Toyota oil is the 0W-20.

Sorry, meant Visom. Was confusing it with XVHI.
