I called the ExxonMobil Industrial and Commercial Lubricants product technical information line today.
Interestingly, the menu said that for Mobil 1, I should contact some other number. But that was OK, as I wanted to get the base-oil information on the Toyota 0W-20 SN synthetic.
She told me that any information on the oils marketed under non-Mobil brands is private and can't be disclosed and I should contact Toyota for that information. Fair enough I guess.
Then, I wanted to give it a try and asked about the base oil in Mobil 1. She immediately said "PAO -- poly-alpha-olefin." Then, I asked whether it had any Group III in it. She went silent for a while and did some research. When she came back, she said no, it would be a synthetic blend if it did. Well, take this with a grain of salt. For example, we know that Group III can be legally labeled synthetic. But, in any case, this was some evidence that Mobil 1 may still be a PAO-based truly synthetic oil.
