Why the move to Group III?

I was really upset when I heard that Group III in some considerable amount had apparently been found in Mobil 1 oil. Maybe I became a little bit too upset. But Mobil 1 was my winter oil and when I thought I was maybe being cheated somewhat it upset me.

We need to research all of this more. All of these recent discussions have really put new life into bobistheoilguy.com. We need to find out about more oils. How about Redline? Royal Purple?

It may not be bad for there to apparently be a lot of Group III oil in Mobil 1. Maybe it is a good thing. But if Mobil 1 is far more expensive than synthetic oils that have a comparable amount of Group III oil in them that causes me to question a lot of stuff. The Mobil 1 does seem to have a lower pour point than many of the other Group III synthetic oils.

Since no one has, in 5 pages, challenged this totally undocumented rumor that Mobil 1 has switched to Group III, I will. Offer some relevant proof. Saying things like "someone told me", and "a guy did this or that as a test", and "I've heard", are worthless as evidence of the claim that Mobil 1 is now Group III. I've not seen anything, on this thread, this website, or elsewhere, that constitutes relevant, substantiated, evidence from a trusted source, of this claim.

Normally I would agree BUT Tom knows his stuff if he says Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15/50 has a big dose of GPIII then I believe him, at least for the lot number and bottle he tested.

But is that a blanket "they Changed base stocks" NO not at all.

Now what no one has said is post Katrina a lot of "sourceing" went on to find base stocks and additives and it could be that the bottle tom tested is a Katrina bottle and as such is a "make due" till we get back on line with our normal base stock sorces to me makes sense and is OK.

bruce does raise a valid point and I would add that Joe from XOM (nice guy btw) said that it WAS a group III but they reformulated it back to a PAO. So bruce could be right...
