This filter is off an '09 Accord 2.4 30K miles ran 5k miles OCI. Sorry the pics aren't real good, but I was in a hurry. The filter looked really good. The ADBV is very sturdy and seals well, and also the media looks very uniform. The media is crimped together with metal.

The pleats look a little more opened up on the crimp side than in real life. This is a very small filter. All filters open up at the crimped end it seems, but when you have a metal crimp and a metal center tube it is no concern.

The ADBV is so impressive in how tight it seals and solidness that it is almost a reason to get the P1 as much or more than for the higher filtering efficiency. I could live with the Classics 97.5% efficiency for the price, but the ADBV not only prevents oil from draining out of the filter, but is what seals the filtered side from the unfiltered. The P1 silicone ADBV seals very well for both drain back and the baseplate to filter element interface even after a full OCI. the metal to metal bypass also seemed to be very tight.

press the macro button on the camera for the closeup pictures. its usually represented by a flower.

Yeah next time I need to use that setting. I was in a hurry and just trying to not get oil on my camera lol.

I spreaded the media some that can be seen at the crimp, so the pleats weren't quite as spread out when the filter first came a part. I looked for them but didn't see any holes at all. I didn't cut the media open and measure it but the media seemed pretty thick.

Based on the Motorcraft FL-822 (an L14610 clone), the media area should be around 95 sq-in. Not sure about the thickness.

I'd like to know of the PureONE 14610 has more media area. If you have time, measure the area ... you can do it by just measuring the pleat depth and doing an area calculation.

Yep that's a real work of art

Nothing like this 4.5K filter

And quite frankly makes this 4K filter look like it was made by 2yr. olds with crayons.

I will admit, the P1 certainly did it's job well.

But is certainly overkill in most applications, sort of like hiring a NASA shuttle engineer to sweep the floor at McDonalds.

Might be what NASA shuttle engineers are doing after the shuttle program is coming to an end this year. Congress thinks it would be better to privatize space exploration. Unfortunately all the private space companies keep blowing up rockets on launch... so guess what the good ole USA is doing in the meantime. Sending our astronauts to Russia and paying out the wazoo to have them go up on their rickidy bucket of bolts. amazing...

I was inclined to agree the the P1 is probably overkill vs a Purolator classic or Fram extra guard. But I saw a link to a GM study that compared an oil filter with 98.75% efficiency at 20 microns (I think) had the same engine wear at 150K miles vs one with the same efficiency at 10 microns (Which a P1 basically approaches) at 375k miles. I wished I could find the link. also the P1 is only $2more retail than the Classic. The silicone ADBV is nice to have too.

I had no idea! thats grand

Well i couldn't find the study. It is in the SAE papers. It basically said the finer the filtration the less engine wear. Here's a link to a summary: filter study summary

Asoil

SAE

This looks to be a long interesting read maybe: Gov

I have to assume that the only part that is overkill is the price? What else would matter? If you could get a PureONE for $2.79 would it still be overkill?

Personally, I don't consider spending $12 a year vs. $6 a year on oil filters overkill if I'm getting a quality filter that I KNOW is reliable. Is saving $6 a year really worth the risk of a filter failure and the constant thought while driving down the road if the filter is still in one piece? Not for me it not worth $6.

Maybe the solid rocket boosters shells and Ecore design. Rocket motor blow-outs on pad ... nice.

Good links. Isn't it about time for someone to post the typical - "VWs only had a bug screen, and they ran for 100K miles".
