OK so I went over the little P1 14476 filter with a fine tooth comb to see if the media's bond to the end caps near the media seam crimp is really an issue.

The media pleats seem to fit into slots in a plastic cap and are bonded. The cap is also bonded to the steel end cap. On each side of the media crimp the there are two pleats that are gapped more than the rest and over time the media distorts, gets wavy like all filters can do. There is some abrasion of the filter media where these pleats go into the plastic cap but it would be very hard for the pleat to complete tear from the end cap and alow oil through.

Good question, that I don't know. I am sort of thinking the cap is molded hot onto the filter media but I don't know. I'm not really sure how that would work so it's just as possible the cap is molded with the slots then the pleats are glued in.

Anybody have a link to one of the videos of manufacturing filters? There isn't any plastic cap. It is just media, glue, and an end cap. Can you imagine getting all the pleats lined up with preformed slots? I would say either the cap is filled with glue or the media dipped in it and then put into the end cap. It seems to me I have seen references to a plastisol, which really is a form of glue.

It does not appear just to be a layer of glue. You can see the slots that the pleats are fitting into. I don't really have a clue how filters are manufactured, but I'd assume there is a machine with a die with slots that the media pleats are folded into. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to feed them into a plastic cap.

Interesting. I have two of these filters setting on the shelf awaiting my own 1ZZ engine. I'm half tempted to slice one open, to see what a new one looks like. But I can't bear to ruin a new filter!!

Somebody persuade me.

Royal Purple doesn't seem to be using any slotted plastic end caps. When I watched the video, the sound broke up where they were putting the end caps on the media.

I was looking at the Ecotec filter PF457G and the media pleats appeared to be bonded to to the plastic endcap similar to the P1. So if we just knew the procedure used to bond the end caps to the pleats on the the PF457G then we'd know how the P1 is made lol.

But seriously, Ecotec filter changers should keep an eye on the media to end cap connection where the pleats are wider spaced at the media seam. You don't even have to cut the filter open, so no excuses

The PF 457G is not an Ecotec. It is an entirely different system from either Ecotec or conventional steel end caps. I am not sure how they are made. It could be either a thermoplastic injected into a mold with the media, or more likely a thermosetting material molded onto the media. Did you watch the Royal Purple video? Did you see any plastic endcaps? The lady was putting media cores into empty end caps.

I think you need to quit chasing will of the wisp plastic end caps and admit the Pure One had less than the best glue job.

How a Royal Purple filter is made is irrelevant to how an P1 is made, dur. P1's are a much more higher volume product and I wouldn't be surprised there are differences in the manufacturing process. Besides filter's apparently get baked at high temperature. Maybe that is part of how they get bonded?

While there are materials that would cure at room temperatures, in most processes it is cheaper to use one requiring a bake cycle to bond the glue to the endcaps and media.

Aside from the type of media, I doubt there is much difference in how they are made.

interesting photos. I'm running a supertech to 10k oci with Mobil 1 Extended Performance in the 06 vibe 1.8L.

I highly doubt there are pre-cut slots for the end of the pleats to fit into before potting. I think they just fit the metal end caps on the media and pot them together somehow.

Well it's possible that the plastic the media pleats are potted to is heated and wicks up the pleats, but it definitely not a layer of glue or adhesive. It is some form of plastic cap that you can clearly see in the pics or if you take a P1 apart.
