Can someone give me an oversized filter reccomendation for a 2000 Toyota 4 Runner 4x4 with the 3.4 engine? The filter number for most applications is 3614. Thanks for the help.

I can't say it is a proper cross for your application, but I'm using a Supertech 8316 ($2 from a clearance sale) on a Saturn that calls for the 3614. The filter is longer, but doesn't seem to hold much more oil. It has an orange ADBV and another spring-valve inside, which I think is some kind of extra ADBV to keep oil in the filter. Bypass ratings for the two are about the same according to cross-references on Purolator's website. This is an odd filter, so the extra can size may be to accomodate the extra valves rather than extra media. I have not cut one open.

my Suzuki Swift uses the 3614 also, In place of it I use a Motorcraft FL400s which is made for Ford by Purolater and can be had at Wal-Mart for $3.28ea. It holds 1/4qt more than the 3614 and had a silcone(orange)ADBV and the bypass is at the theaded end which is where I like it. It is the filter used on some of the Ford Windstar's 3.8L's and others. The Wix/NAPA # is **1516.

Will,
start with the OEM filter number and work from there. You want a filter with the same thread, same gasket diameter, same or lower internal bypass setting, and physically fits.

In any case, I do not see a need for a larger filter. In the unlikely case of a filter failing and causing engine damage, the filter maker will not pay for repairs if you don't use the filter they recommends. I know, lots of folks are sure a bigger filter is better, but they have no data showing that to be the case in almost every example.

Thankyou Ken2. Good reasons to not waste time researching filters for the wrong reasons.

I've heard that PH8 and PH16 filters will also fit. At least the gasket looks to be the same size. The PH16 is a fatter 3614, and the PH8 is a fatter 3600. I don't know what kind of clearance you have though so they may or may not have room to fit.

This is for educational purposes only. I agree with Ken2, use the stock filter and be happy.

The longer version of the 3614 is 3600, FL400, and FL400S if you have room not all Toyotas do.

On Toyotas its hard to beat the quality for the price and good flow characteristics of OEM stock Toyota filter in a Toyota. They also use a silicon ADBV and a radius filter seal. The radius seal helps them come off much easier after they been on there for sometime. My local Toyota dealer sells Toyota filters in this stock applaction (size) for $3.95 if I buy 2 or more.

Any cross reference to the PH3600 or Wix 51516 as stated above is correct and will work of you have the extra room. FL400 is what I've used and it is a good filter. Any filter with a thread side bypass valve is a step up in my book. Motorcraft FL400, Wix/Napa *1516, K&N HP-2009, Mobil 1 M-209 are all great upsized replacements for the PH3614 size IMHO.
