I don't know much about Jeeps and was curious about oversize filters for a 1990 Cherokee Sport with a 4.0L 6cyl. It's my brother's, and he's currently running his first treatment of Auto-Rx. Thought I'd help him out with selecting a different oil and filter for after the 2nd treatment since he wants to keep it for at least another 100K or so. He's currently running a Fram PH-3985 (don't worry, talked him out of using that filter for the future

). I looked at a filter cross-reference site and found that an AC Delco PF-970C will work as well. He's got room for a longer one, but I don't know that one exists. Anyone know?

Two choices: Keep running the metric threads and the 3985 equivalent or change the oil filter adaptor out to the 1991 and later used on the 4.0l in the Cherokees, which will let you use the Motorcraft FL-1A equivalent. The swap is easy to do except you need a goofy torx socket to make it happen.

The madxj article sums it all up pretty nicely.

Thanks, guys. I was thinking that there may not be a larger filter available. Undummy, I'll forward the url for that very-well-explained conversion to him.

Or, if you have the room for a really big filter for a PH8a style replacement, you could use a Hastings LF426 or Wix 51773. This sucker is 7 inches long….and you would never have filter envy again!

Darrenc... I'm currently using the Wix 51773 on my 2.5L TJ. It holds a full quart of oil and with my relocation mount and lines my little 4 banger now holds the 6 quarts like it's big brother 4.0L.
