I just came back from Saskatoon Canada visiting my wife's family. After dinner

at one family gathering I overheard her uncle say that his 1990 Chevy Diesel truck would reach 1 million km in the next couple of years. He bought it used with about 60k miles on it. The engine has never been rebuilt but the transmission needed to be replaced. Until recently when he purchased another truck this Chevy was the main farm vehicle. I had been to his farm earlier in the week not knowing of the milestone truck. But I can vouch for the hard driving conditions this truck must have been submittted to:

  • very dusty dirt and gravel roads all around
  • incredible cold in the winter
  • lots of towing of farm and recreational vehicles

  • He did say he changed the oil regularly but I dont know if he even knew which oil was used.

Was that the 6.2L diesel ? Does it have a turbo ?

I recall hearing that advice for someone with the older GM diesels in a truck was 'to stay out of the mountains'.

Next time you talk to him see if you can find out what oil he used. It would be interesting.

I just got an email from his daughter:

"...it has a 6.2 diesel engine. He uses from the Farmers Co-op D.M.O engine oil and has recently started using a product
called "Gen49" which is a Power-Up product which is supposed to reduce engine wear and raise fuel economy...."
