Out with the S2000, in with the... Ferrari...

I‘m in agreement here-the NSX is a fun car to drive, but there’s just something about those 308s, the cool factor is off the charts! Hope you have lots of sunny weather (& maybe a Hawaiian shirt or two.).

There is no doubt the NSX is superior in literally every way... except cool factor... maybe.

My friend has a 328 . I have done the timing belts, the valves replaced all the hoses and rubber adjusted the valves got the FI working, Redid the A/C. They are not that hard to work on and the engine is Mounted like a FWD drive car. I think they are beautiful cars. Disappointing in ever aspect. My F150 is more fun to drive.
I'd say they're only disappointing if you don't know why you've got one in the first place. If you prefer your F150, you clearly have different set of objectives than I do, which you absolutely have a right to.

Nice car, looks to be in great shape.

Does the timing belt really need to be replaced after only 5 years?

Hopefully you can get some miles put on this thing, it’s only gotten 600 miles in 3 years.

Thanks! There seems to be debate about timing belts. Some folks say 3y/36Kmi, others say 5y. I'm going to do it for peace of mind, because it's only a few hundred in parts and an afternoon (in theory). Interestingly, people that _drive_ their cars seem to have fewer problems with the timing belts. But, as compared to other cars I've owned, they do seem to break more often!

Did your shorts instantly get shorter? Love that Ferrari looks wise. I’m an S2000 owner and it doesn’t compare. 308 Performance is a let down but perfect for cruising and sounds great.

Well, I gotta ask, since no one else has….
What oil are you going to run in it?
Beautiful car, I don’t blame you for making the switch-it may not be super fast, but I bet the engine note is glorious!

Nice swap there. I can imagine an S2000 is not a car most would own super long term. S2000 is very unique, i would like to own one, but only for a year or three. The NSX is 100% a classy keeper. I hope the 308 treats you well and goes up in value.

S2K is amazing car. Its element was really on the track, though.

I wouldn't say 308 performance is a let down. Well, only if you expected it to be some kind of crazy high performance automobile in 2021, which, of course, it is not. If that's what you were expecting, then you had no idea what you were getting into.

I think that's a decent summary, actually. The S2K was fun to own and experience, if I had infinite room I would keep it just for those random days it sounded fun, but ultimately it isn't that special. Mine also needed a lot of work to be up to "my standards", paint, interior, etc. Easier to just buy a better one down the road if I decide I need one (although I'll never get in at $6K like I did with my last one, lol).

I mentioned in my original post:
I'll be putting M1 0W-40 in the engine and Red Line 75W-90NS in the transmission, since this is BITOG and I'm sure people will wonder :) The oil filter on these is kind of interesting. There is a "stand pipe" in the middle that allows it to be removed without spilling much oil. I'll be using a Baldwin B253.

Beautiful car and fantastic acquisition! I'm sure you'll really enjoy it!

They do sound amazing, there was a video I saw on IG last week that was filmed from inside a 308 and the guy driving around, it was great, that whole "basic" nature of it, that truly mechanical connection.

They are not that hard . Not like doing a Japanese car but you can take off the strut assembly and it is not that bad. As to not understanding . I would like a Ferrari to impress me with power rather than be like riding in a Porsche 912. Still the 308/ 328 is a beauty. I also have a friend that owns a Ferrari Berlinetta boxer . That car isn't as pretty but it has get up and go .

True. Most imagine any Ferrari is a crazy performance machine. How fast can you really go on the street anyway? I’m not talking down on it. I like the s2000 for the same reason. It sounds fast but isn’t really. Perfect for a part time fun car

Lots to unpack there, but yes! Miatas and S2Ks are fun because you can ring the motor out a bit and not be going 150mph. And the 308, I don't think was a crazy performance machine in its day, but it was definitely higher performance. Its day was 36+ years ago. That's many many many generations of "the car". When you drive an older car, you have to remember that context. Even the NSX is not really much of a performer these days, albeit it is much better than the 308.

I decided that between the S2000, NSX, and SC400, I had too many reliable, fun cars and I needed to spice things up a bit with some Italian style. I've been lusting after Ferrari 308s for a long time and finally decided I should take a look for one earlier this year. Unfortunately, car market what it is, I just couldn't pull the trigger; everything I found was $80K+ and that's just a lot of money to spend on a car.

I enjoy a good BaT auction as much as anyone, and 308s pop up there pretty regularly. One popped up in early July[1], no reserve. It was not real well presented. I didn't think much of it until the day the auction ended. A buddy of mine jokingly asked me if I was going to be bidding; I said no, of course, there aren't any deals on BaT and I wasn't really looking for 308s anymore. But I pulled the auction up and the car was sitting pretty low, so I thought, "I'll pay attention to this..." And so I did, and ultimately I decided that I'd throw out one strong bid. And that bid ended up winning the auction!!!

The car arrived yesterday. I think it's in pretty decent shape. It needs a timing belt, but that's a pretty easy bit of work on these cars. It's got a few electrical issues to sort out, but again that's usually not real hard on these. The 308 community is amazing and there really isn't much that isn't well known and well discussed, which is great.

Looking forward to doing some maintenance on it and then enjoying it. I'll be putting M1 0W-40 in the engine and Red Line 75W-90NS in the transmission, since this is BITOG and I'm sure people will wonder :) The oil filter on these is kind of interesting. I sold the S2000; my wife assured me that I didn't need to, but it just made sense. It's a wonderful car, but I just didn't drive it much. And I don't think having a 308 in the mix will encourage me to drive it more. Someone else is enjoying it now!

P.S. Please, no Magnum references... I've already heard about 10,000 of them!!! JK, go for it, really!
